Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: 11-5-2008
goal: 75,000

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,

Many people in the international community feel strongly about the protection of humpback and fin whales. If your countrymen insist on hunting these endangered species in protected waters, it will result in a black mark of shame on your country and its governing body in the perceptions of the world community for allowing such actions to occur. Public outcry could result in sanctions and strained diplomatic relations. I do not see how acquiring whale bodies would be worth those consequences to you.

I have great respect for the Japanese people. It baffles me that you have no concern for the survival of an intelligent creature. How can you consider these magnificant whales as food?

This is nonsence. Why do people insist on killing our beutiful wildlife for no good reason instead of finding ways to coinside and protect them? Outragious!

research is a ridiculous disguise for straight out hunting and slaughtering. If you want to research them do it when they are alive. If that is not possible then I don't see the neccessity in killing hundreds. We've already been down the whaling path and it didn't work out back then, it will be the same mistake over again as more countries follow in Japans wake. No whale should die, writhing in agony, at the end of a harpoon EVER AGAIN!!!
