NHL Player Georges Laraque Goes Vegan: Cheer Him On!

Target: Montreal Canadiens Right Wing Georges Laraque
Sponsored by: Care2
This week, Montreal Canadiens forward Georges Laraque announced his commitment to a vegan lifestyle.

Tough guy "Big Georges" as he's known, has been an animal rights activist for years. This summer he even sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper protesting the Canadian seal hunt on behalf of PETA. His decision to go vegan was cemented after watching the 2006 documentary Earthlings however.

"It's unconscionable what's happening to animals in this country and the way we treat animals we eat.... I realized I had to make some big changes," Laraque commented.

As one of only a handful of professional athletes who have spoken out on behalf of animal welfare, he deserves kudos! Join us in sending a note of appreciation to Georges Laraque for being a positive role model in professional sports.

Dear Mr. Laraque,

I just heard about your choice to lead a vegan lifestyle. Thank you for stepping up as a positive role model in professional sports through your deep commitment to animal welfare!

[Your comments will be inserted here]

It takes guts to go against the grain and stand up for what you feel is right. On behalf of innocent animals and professional sports fans in Canada and around the world who look to you as an example of strength and courage, thanks!

Sincerely,

We need to promote vegetarian and vegan diets. Meat is bad not just for us and the animals we eat, but for the environment. Going vegetarian does more to fight pollution than replacing a Chevy Suburban with a Prius!

I have tried to go vegetarian multiple times in the last few years. I have failed every time. I know how hard it is to give up animal products, no matter how strong your convinctions are. I cannot imagine the pressure put on a professional athlete, and look up to you for your lifestyle choice!

After the disgusting actions of quarterback Michael Vick, I greatly appreciate the fact that you're teaching our young, future members of society responsibility and mercy. I only wish that your actions made bigger headlines than the aforementioned, and that there were more athletes like you!
