Gasoline will be $5.00 a gallon by the end of the Bush administration. We need a viable alternative to single occupant vehicle that can service suburban and rural areas.
We need Light Rail
In the early 20th Century, the streetcar and rural Interurban electric trolley lines were the main source of transportation in the USA. Not only did they haul passengers, but also mail and frieght.
At one time you could get on a trolley in Maine in the morning and after many transfers arrive in Washington DC the next night.
During the 1940s 1nd 1950s, the Oil companies, tire companies and General Motors lobbied heavily to cover over or tear out virtually all the streetcar tracks throughout the country and replace the lines with diesel busses.
Now, in the 21st century the streets and highways are clogged with single occupant vehicles as well as busses that belch noxious diesel smoke into the air.
Hundreds of thousands of acres of land have been transformed into freeways, many of which are gridlocked for hours every day.
With the price of gasoline at an all time high, and only going higher, we need to get back to Mass Transit as an economical alternative.
People are now having to choose to buy gasoline or groceries. It is just going to get worse.
We propose spartan, elevated light-rail or monorail lines be built along the center dividers (or off the shoulders) of all the major freeways, with simple transfer stations and park and ride lots, at each interchange where space permits.
These lines can be powered by wind and solar energy.
All components and other aspect of this project must be MADE IN AMERICA.
This would:
1. Reduce gridlock on the roads.
2. Create jobs in the manufacturing of all components of the projects as well as the construction itself.
3. Create a nationwide "Inter-Urban" transportation system using clean electric power.
4. Promote development in the areas adjacent to the interchanges.
5. Vastly reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
