Protect Birth Control: No to President Bush's Latest Proposal

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
The Bush administration is proposing a new regulation that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing birth control to women who need it. This regulation would require federal health programs to certify that they will hire nurses and other providers who openly object to abortion or contraception in order to receive federal aid to run their programs.

The regulation could seriously jeopardize state laws and policies that protect women's access to birth control. For example, state laws that require hospitals to provide sexual-assault victims with access to emergency contraception could be jeopardized!

Members of Congress are calling on the Bush administration to change course. Please let your members of Congress know that you strongly oppose this attack on women's health and individual rights.

For more information on the proposal, see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?_r=1&sq=birth

Dear [Congressperson]:

I'm writing to express my opposition to proposed new rules that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it.

Current federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations and policy and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

I know it's an uphill battle, but I support any efforts to try to convince the Bush administration to change course on the regulation.

The law supports access to safe and legal abortion, to effective birth control and emergency contraception, to reproductive health services and education for all women. Attempts to restrict these rights through legislation, regulation or Constitutional amendment should be prevented. The 14th Amendment guarantees our right to privacy. The right to privacy of our health information (which might include birth control information) was further decided in the case of Griswold v. Connecticut. In this case it is stated that a "right to privacy" can be found within the U.S. Constitution which includes the use of contraception by married couples. This decision paved the way for Eisenstadt v. Baird in 1972, which extended the right to single people. Since the Griswold decision, many of our most cherished rights have emanated from the right to privacy, including the right to abortion. More recently, in Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court relied upon it to extend privacy rights to gay and lesbians within their homes. As part of a job interview one cannot be asked their position on abortion or birth control. The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA) states that it is a violation to solicit or consider employment recommendations based on factors other than personal knowledge or records of job-related abilities or characteristics and the Office of Special Council prosecutes violators. 5 U.S.C. 2302. For Federal jobs this falls as a viable complaint, as it would affect hiring practices, under the Equal Employment Opportunities Act and charges can be filed through the EEOC. In addition, you need to fight the appointment of Janice Rogers Brown to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. This is another attempt of Bush to stack the bench with opponents of Roe vs, Wade. A preservation of rights are paramount whether it is the rights of women to health issues over their own body, or invasion of privacy , or job discrimination of any kind. These rights deserve your full support and any and all attempts to take away these rights need to be blocked.

Bush is a pea-brained self-righteous penis. We can't let him treat people like cattle. What happened to separation between church and state? Please stop all of this madness. Thank you.

You've always worked to ensure that family planning services are available to those who need them. I know I can count on you to continue this (should not even be an) issue. Thanks.

As women we have the RIGHT to birth control, in all its forms. It is an essential RIGHT.One that I for one refuse to relinquish easily!! OUR bodies, OUR choice!!!The very idea that someone else should have the right of way with our bodies/future is offensive and unforgiveable. It is that kind of thinking that makes and keeps women second class citizens!!

WHAT ARE YOU IDIOTS THINKING??!! WE HAVE FAR TOO MANY UNWANTED AND ABUSED CHILDREN IN THIS COUNTRY AS IT IS!! Selfish people who won't give up there children to better homes where they will be wanted and loved, but instead keep them and do not take the proper care of them. DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT OUTLAWING BIRTH CONTROL WILL STOP PEOPLE FROM HAVING SEX?? PEOPLE WILL STILL HAVE SEX (and if you succeed in this bill) THAT WILL RESULT IN UNWANTED PREGNANCIES!! Besides, what is the first thing you republicans cut in your budgets?? SOCIAL SERVICES!!! Which means no one will be around to help these possibly abused future children!! I am trying to control my emotions as I type this but I really have a few unpolite words to say to you people, but all I will say is this SHAME ON ALL OF YOU and USE YOUR BRAINS AND COMMON SENSE!!!!!!!!!!! I mean actually try to USE the brain in your heads and realize this is a MORONIC idea, that this will only cause more problems and cost this country MORE MONEY in the long run.
