Thank Secretary Jewell for Giving Wolves a Reprieve

It's clear that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is set on deserting wolves, as they begin the long road to recovery: A draft rule that would remove protections for wolves across the lower 48 states was recently leaked to the press.

But after an outpouring from activists and supporters, the government -- in a surprise move at the last moment -- yanked the proposal.

Please take a moment today to thank Interior Secretary Sally Jewell for at least giving wolves this reprieve – and urge her to make it permanent.

With protection under the Endangered Species Act, gray wolves have seen tremendous recovery in the northern Rocky Mountains and western Great Lakes. These areas, however, represent a mere 5 percent of their former historic range.

We're happy to see that wolves won't immediately lose Endangered Species Act protections. It's crucial that Sally Jewell hears from you today about your support for wolves and the importance of keeping their protections in place from coast to coast.
Dear Sally Jewell,

I'm writing to thank you for temporarily halting a proposal that would have removed protections for wolves across the lower 48 states and to urge you to make it permanent. I also want to offer my support for recovering wolves in additional areas outside the northern Rocky Mountains and western Great Lakes.

As apex predators wolves play keystone roles in ecosystems and benefit a wide range of species -- from beavers to songbirds and pronghorn. Recovering wolves in California, the Pacific Northwest, southern Rocky Mountains, Northeast and elsewhere will be tremendously beneficial both to maintaining wolf populations and to the health of our wildlands.

We encourage you to permanently cancel any plans to strip wolf protections across the lower 48 and to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a national plan to recover wolves to remaining suitable habitat in the continental United States.

Sincerely,
