Support America's first offshore wind farm

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
Several U.S. Senators, led by Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), are trying to block plans for "Cape Wind," the nation's first offshore wind farm in Cape Cod, MA. The wind farm would create jobs and meet 75% of the electricity needs of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption and cut global warming pollution from power plants.

But despite the huge potential benefits, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) backs a bill that would effectively halt the proposed construction. The 130-turbine, 24-square-mile cluster of windmills would be about 8 miles from Kennedy's home in Hyannis Port.

Ted Kennedy and other rich homeowners just don't want their view spoiled.

The Cape Wind project has been undergoing stringent environmental reviews for five years now; experts estimate there would be very little if any negative impact under water for marine life.

As record oil prices turn attention to the need for renewable fuels, momentum is building in Congress to buck Senator Edward M. Kennedy's bid to block the proposed Cape Cod wind energy project. Speak up! Sign this petition and let your representatives know that you want renewable energy!

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to vote to remove Sen. Stevens' offshore wind farm amendment from the Coast Guard Authorization Act (H.R. 889).

[your comment here]

The wind farm would save millions of dollars in energy costs and help the United States wean itself off foreign oil at a time of record-high prices, in a region where fuel bills have doubled in 5 years.

During its construction and operation, Cape Wind would create jobs and increase tax revenues in the region. And once operational, it would be able to meet about 75 percent of the electricity needs of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption and cut global warming pollution from power plants.

For the past five years, Cape Wind has been subject to an ongoing rigorous environmental review process that is examining all aspects of the project, including wildlife and navigational issues, to ensure that any appropriate protective measures are adopted.

Experts estimate there would be very little if any negative impact on marine life.

Development of America’s offshore wind industry would benefit both our environment and our economy. Please protect Cape Wind and remove Sen. Stevens' amendment before passing the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act.

Sincerely,

Do what is right by your state and your constituents, let alone establish a strong and positive precedent for your country, rather than making a decision based on your personal wishes.

This is an important step toward the solution to our energy problems. We can only extract so much coal, then it will be gone forever, leaving us with a scarred and polluted landscape. Nuclear is NOT the answer either, as what will we do with the waste? Put it in the ground to poison our water? Besides nuclear waste is a security hazard that we should be far more concerned with than putting fences along our borders. Wind and solar are the sustainable, healthy options. I'd rather see wind farms than reactors. I wish we would use some of the wasteland near the river Rouge, or the old Uniroyal plant for a wind farm. We need serious leadership in this direction, and we need it now.

We have to take steps in the right direction to stop use of oil products. This is a wonderful project, it must be built.

So, exactly when are we all going to have the moral character to put our money where our mouths are. We need other ways to power our society, and we all have to do our share to get it.

Any elected official who opposes this clearly beneficial bill is displaying their true loyalty to interests other than those of the people of the United States of America. Please be assured that such loyalties will be noted and given due consideration as elections approach.

What would be the harm in producing energy for the American people and help the enviroment at the same time? But I guess the upper class on the bay think that thier precious view is more important than producing enviromentally safe energy, jobs, as well as saving the enviroment from harmful pollutants that can help protect our children, their children and the world as a whole!

What a better way to concerve energy than to use what was naturally given to us. We take for granted mother nature and her way of giving us the things we need. We should be thankful something like this is being done because to be honest our energy supply is running short on us...its been in the news of recent. Seriously consider this, you wihtout hot running water, not being able to watch tv, not hearing a radio, the microwave wont work, the vaccum doesnt run, no hot running water for a shower, no clean cloths because you washing machine takes electricity and energy to run and we are out...No hospital rooms can furnish false life to people needing it to keep them alive, no emergencie rooms will run there is nothing to see with except candles and that isnt enough. When will you begin to take notice of a plan that is in the best interest of many of our futures...Now would be a good time.

It's time to move away from narrow minded, materialistic concerns; we already over consume, waste and pollute and focus on the accumulation and protection of wealth... time to think what's right for our planet whose stewardship has been entrusted to us. The US is doing a lousey job at stewardship and needs to start showing some of the right stuff again. Support wind farms as soon as possible, wherever possible and put aside your materialistic greed. Your wealth will never make you happy but doing what's right to help this country move away from fossil fuels for energy will lighten your heart.
