Tell Walmart: Post Seafood Warnings!

  • by: Oceana

Oceana is asking grocery stores to protect kids from mercury in fish by posting the Food and Drug Administration's mercury advice at their seafood displays. Over a third of the major grocery companies are on board but retailing behemoth Walmart has not agreed to post signs at its Walmart Supercenters or Sam's Club stores.

An EPA scientist has estimated that one in ten women of childbearing age has enough mercury in her body to pose neurological risks to her developing baby. Clearly, many families remain unaware of the ongoing risk of mercury in seafood and how to avoid it. Because mercury can harm a young child or unborn baby's developing nervous system, the FDA has issued advice for women of child-bearing age and children to avoid or limit their consumption of certain fish that are contaminated with elevated levels of mercury.

Women need to know this information when buying seafood! Tell Walmart to post mercury signs at their stores.
Dear Walmart,

I am writing to ask you to post signs about the FDA mercury advice at your seafood counters. I have learned from Oceana that a number of grocery companies, like Safeway, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, have started posting this important information to help customers make informed decisions about which seafood to buy.

Since an EPA scientist has estimated that one in ten women has enough mercury in her body to pose neurological risks to her developing fetus and seafood is the primary route of exposure, it is clear that families need more information about this issue.

I urge you to join Oceana's Green List of grocers who protect their customers from mercury. You can find the FDA advice at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/admehg3.html and information about Oceana's Green List at http://www.oceana.org/greenlist.
