End Alaska's Awful Aerial Wolf Killing Programs -- Support the PAW Act!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

In 1971, Congress passed the Airborne Hunting Act banning the use of airplanes to hunt wolves. But the State of Alaska is exploiting a loophole that has allowed private citizens in aircraft to kill of hundreds of wolves annually under what's called "wildlife management."

Since 2003, the state's aerial killing programs have claimed the lives of more than 1,000 wolves. During the 2008/2009 aerial gunning season, more than 250 wolves were killed -- making it one the deadliest season in years!

Recently, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, federal legislation working to end the controversial practice of aerial wolf hunting in Alaska and prevent it from spreading to states in the lower 48. The introduction of PAW in the Senate marks a landmark opportunity to stop aerial hunting once and for all. Urge your Senator to support the PAW Act today.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As one of your constituents and someone who cares about protecting wildlife, I urge you to cosponsor Senator Dianne Feinstein's inaugural introduction of the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, federal legislation to end the controversial practice of using aircraft and gunmen to chase and kill wolves in Alaska.

Officials in Alaska have flouted the intent of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act that Congress passed in 1972 and perpetuated a scientifically unfounded aerial wolf killing program.

[Your personal comments will be added here.]

So far, more than 1,000 wolves have been chased down by gunmen in low-flying aircraft and killed with high-powered rifles. This year alone, at least 232 wolves have been killed -- putting the 2008/2009 aerial wolf killing season on pace to become the deadliest in years.

This brutal practice has been condemned by wildlife biologists, hunters and conservationists from Alaska and around the world... and with good cause.

Please protect these beautiful animals. Aerial hunting makes my heart ache. It seems as bad as a canned hunt, what's the difference. Please stop this from happening, it is awful and in no time it will destroy the wolf population.

I can see no reason for this "sport" unless the wolves are multiplying over capacity and/or causing harm to the environment or domesticated animals or a large amount of humans.

This is no different then the settlers killing off the buffalo. Wealthy thrill seekers looking for anther mark on their bedpost. It is the same as killing an animal in a cage. This is a disgrace to the human race and should of been stopped a long time ago.

I am outraged by aerial wolf killing and hope that you will do everything in your power to stop this awful practice as an original cosponsor of the Protect America's Wildlife Act. This brutal practice has been condemned by wildlife biologists, hunters and conservationists from Alaska and around the world... and with good cause. Under the program, private trophy hunters can use planes to track and shoot down wolves from above or chase them to exhaustion and kill them at point-blank range. It is not ethical hunting and the state has no reliable numbers on which to base their decisions on how many wolves are killed under the program or any solid data to substantiate the program's effectiveness. Thank you for considering my comments. I look forward to your response.

You are in the unique position of having the power to stop the inhumanity. The American people, your constituents and people all over the world are asking for mercy on these persecuted animals. You are elected to do the will of the people and we are asking you to stop the killing.

Dear Senator, When focusing on our wolves, it is a shame to hear that wolves are just being shot down while they are just in are in a location doing nothing. We talk about war and how it is not humane to shot down on civilians, but how is it any different with these animals. They are majestic creatures. So are you saying it is okay to go on shooting sprees on individuals themselves? We talk about our global warming on how we are to take a stand because it is killing our nature, but what happens if we start taking control and killing things faster than what our global warming is doing. Our we going to keep adding on to the problem? We have enough problems and maybe we should use the money for something important. If the farmers are so concerned about their cattle then come up with a better solution? Wolves are bred to hunt because they do not have hands to go to a restaurant or store to buy food. Wolves have territories like people have properties and homes and wolves are only protecting where they live. People do the same if they are threatened so how is it different. I believe these killings need to end.

Dear Senator, Wolves receive a bad reputation because they kill farmers cattle, etc., These wolves are wild animals that rely on natural instinct in order to survive. They are not like a human where they know right from wrong, but still choose to make the wrong choices. These wolves and for that matter all animals are doing what is natural to them. There is no question in my mind that these gunmen need to stop killing these innocent wolves and laws need to be set. These animals have a right to be on the earth just as much as a human does. We can only blame ourselves as we are the ones destroying our whole eco-system. We have no respect for anyone or anything. We became greedy and only think of ourselves. Nature was here a lot longer than us and we need to learn to leave things alone. What are we going to keep using excuses and keep killing every living thing on earth. I want my kids, grandkids, great grandkids to be able to see what I have grown up to enjoy and love. I have a pack of wolves by my cabin and I look forward to hearing their howls or seeing them. Why in the world would anyone want to destroy something as beautiful as them. I truly believe that these animals were put on this earth for a purpose. They are no different from any other animal out there. Each animals has its own way of surviving, just like us. I cannot even tell you how disturbing this is that this is allowed. Its no different than murdering a human. What after all the wolves are extinct, what next? What animal are they going to start killing next and what excuse will it be? I cannot stress how important it is that we set laws and carry out these laws. These animals deserve our protection and I feel it is our responsibility to do so.

I find it offensive both that these wolves are being massacred from the air and that Alaska is exploiting a legislative loophole. I am also astounded that Congress -- with all the legal experts at your disposal -- manages to include these loopholes in your legislation in the first place!

This is not sport. It is a brutal and unnecessary cull. These wolves should be protected by Canada, not hunted to extinction

Imagin every time you see one of these gunmen with their big grinning smiles, that it was your child who was left to suffer without your wife or husband to care for them...and can you even begin to imagin your horror if instead of the cut off forearms thrown across your 'desks' weren't those of INNOCENT Wolves, but instead the HANDS of YOUR CHILDREN!!! THINK for just one moment about that, when you refuse to reach for the pen that could give you back your heart with a single stroke from the Very Hand STILL connected to YOU...

I know we live in a modern world where we use technology and other means to hunt, but please, this isn't right. Getting in a helicopter and shooting down creatures for sport is not right in any sense. I won't waste time detailing morality and ethics, but hope you know something is wrong when you see it. Please, make a difference. Thank you.

Senator this practice is cruel and inhumane. It also carries over to pups that lose their parent and most likely will also die. Even if you are a hunter this is far from any kind of sportsmanship. Its just cruel.

Wolves are a beautiful wild animal, who deserve to be on this earth like you and me. What gives man the right to chase down and violently kill these helpless animals. Has the govenment, our leaders, lost their respect for life. I am referring not just to the wolves, but seals and their babies being clubbed to death. HORRIFIC

I wonder how those of you would feel if the situation was in the reverse, if it was the wolves flying overhead in a plane and shooting at you, leaving you dead or wounded! I am ashamed of you Alaska!! I am ashamed that you became a state of the Union!! You have no right to kill or maim defenseless animals, especially as noble and beautiful as the wolf. Almighty God breathed life into them as well as he did us. That makes human beings no better than any creature on earth! Wake up and stop the slaughter before the wolves become an endanged species again. How are you going to show your grand children this noble animal, where man's best friend is derived from, if they are no longer in existance?? STOP THE KILLING NOW!!!
