Stop the Stealth Attack on Country of Origin Labels!

Have you noticed the label that tells you where your meat, poultry, fish and produce came from? Those labels on meat and poultry could be abolished by Congress in a little-noticed negotiation between the U.S. House and Senate to finalize the Farm Bill.

Once every five years, the Farm Bill, a giant piece of legislation governing everything from corn subsidies to food stamps, goes before Congress, and the 2013 Farm Bill is now close to final. At this late hour, the multinational meat industry wants to insert provisions that would abolish country of origin labels for meat and poultry.

Critical changes are being proposed NOW. Once this negotiation is complete, it will be nearly impossible to derail the agreed bill, so we have to make sure they don't eliminate Country of Origin labels and key food safety provisions.

Speak out now, and make sure lawmakers hear you over multinational conglomerates!
Dear [Member of Congress],

I want to know where my meat comes from, and Country of Origin labeling (COOL) helps me make better buying decisions based on my own values. If I want to buy meat grown and processed in America, I should be able to do so based on the label, and I urge you to uphold COOL in the Farm Bill.

I also urge you to oppose the Benishek amendment to the Farm Bill, which would halt efforts to improve the safety of spinach and peanut butter and other foods, and throw up unnecessary roadblocks to food safety.

The Farm Bill should not be used as a forum to roll back consumer protections, and I urge you to stand behind country of origin labeling and strong food safety measures.

Sincerely,
