End Violence Against Indigenous Community Leaders in Honduras

Two indigenous rights activists have been murdered in Honduras for their work supporting the Lenca community and opposing corporate projects that would cut off this community from its land.

Berta Cáceres took a courageous stand to protect the land and natural resources her community depended on from the Agua Zarca dam project which would cut off community access to the Gualcarque river, an important sacred site and a major source of water and food.

Nelson García advocated for indigenous Lencas from the Río Chiquito community who were being evicted from their land the day he was murdered. Both were activists with the National Council of Indigenous Organizations of Honduras.

We must hold those responsible accountable.

Take action now to:
  1. Tell corporations involved in the dam project to withdraw their support
  2. Call on the Honduran government to protect Cáceres’ family, members of her indigenous rights organization, and fellow Mexican activist Gustavo Castro who was injured and the only witness of her murder
  3. Full and independent investigation overseen by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights into the murders
