Save Yellowstone's Bison: Stop the Senseless Killing

Target: U.S. Department of the Interior
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Yellowstone National Park is home to America's last free-roaming buffalo herd, a reminder of the great American West. Yet these buffalo are needlessly killed when they leave the borders of the park by state officials who fear the animals will spread brucellosis to cattle, even though there has never been a single case of a buffalo in the wild spreading the disease to cattle. More than 3,000 of these buffalo have been killed in the past 15 years.

Even worse, our government is spending taxpayer money to kill bison that migrate out of Yellowstone to the Horse Butte Peninsula - in the name of protecting cattle – even though there are no longer any cattle grazing on the peninsula.

Local landowners and conservation groups are urging the federal government to stop killing bison immediately on the Horse Butte Peninsula and to undertake a new environmental impact study to update the current bison management plan. Please urge the Department of the Interior to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's bison now!

Your comments to the Department of the Interior on why you oppose killing bison leaving Yellowstone National Park

I am writing to express my opposition to the trapping and killing of bison on Horse Butte Peninsula. This killing is senseless and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Cattle no longer graze on the peninsula – the last remaining cattle grazing ranch was recently purchased, and the new owners have removed the remaining cattle and declared the land open to Yellowstone bison. Continuing to trap and kill bison under the guise of protecting cattle from brucellosis is wasteful and wrong.

I urge you to stop the killing of Yellowstone's bison on the Horse Butte Peninsula until an environmental impact study is completed to assess necessary changes to the Interagency Bison Management Plan now that there are no longer cattle grazing in this area and the local landowners support grazing bison on their land.

Sincerely,

Please reevaluate the need to cull bison numbers in the Horse Butte Peninsula. I ask you to stop the shooting of the numbers that have taken on a natural migration until a completed study indicates a continued need for this type of effort. Senseless killing is senseless. We must be open to change and changing a policy that is outdated must get immediate attention. If the management plan cannot be revisited with area changes, then it is a bad plan. Either way, a reevalution must be done to best serve all involved. Sincerely, Kristen Mueller
