Stop Prairie Dog Poisonings!

Target: U.S. Forest Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Forest Service wants to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs on the American plains -- risking creatures like burrowing owls, hawks, swift fox, the critically endangered black-footed ferret and the complex balance of life on the American Prairie.

Widespread poisoning could kill tens of thousands of prairie dogs, which would jeopardize the continued recovery of the critically imperiled black-footed ferret, the most endangered mammal in North America.

The public has 45 days to comment on this proposal - the deadline is in July. Take action now! Your comments will be most effective if they are personalized. Tell federal officials why you think prairie dogs -- and our grassland ecosystem -- should be protected.

2007 Black-tailed Prairie Dog Comments

To the Forest Service:

Please accept my comments on prairie dog management and the proposed Plan Amendment 3 to the Nebraska National Forest Management Plan.

[Your personal comments here]

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and the American prairie, I strongly object to your proposal to allow additional poisoning of prairie dogs on our National Grasslands, even in areas far from private land. I urge you to end this unnecessary and harmful planning process and leave the prairie dogs -- and the Nebraska National Forest Management Plan -- alone.

Sincerely,

Sounds like a well thought out terrorist plan by the government to do away with the prairie dogs. Again shame on YOU for not valuing life in any form.

Hey, knock it off you schmucks! Don't you realize that the prairie dogs are endangered and should be protected from this type of cruel practice?!

Killing prairie dogs is suicide on our part. We are destroying the ecology.

There is a tiny little park in Lubbock, TX set up decades ago to have a tiny haven for endangered prairie dogs. We need these animals, and we need the larger predators that will die from eating poisoned prairie dogs.

I think that it is disgusting to kill innocent animals. They are part of the grassland ecosystems and should be protected.

I believe that although I dont have enough information to suggest an alternative, there in fact is a better solution than mass poisonings. In my experiences, the quicker, faster, easier way is usually not the best in the long run.

Why can't someone come up with a way to "CURE" these sweet creatures instead of poiosoning them? If we can spread poison, we can spread some sort of medication!

The Prairie dogs are partof the eco-system..there has got to be a more humane way to deal with their population. We have lost to many animals already with people's carelessness.

How can this action be considered ecologically sound when you are destroying not only the primary food source of the endangered black footed ferret, but also the one animal that if removed from the great plains, would cause the plains themselves to alter their basic ecology? Isn't this a case of paying off ranchers for political support?

The grasslands cant exist without the underground work that the prairie dogs do to help aerate and help resist salinization of the land. Responsible farmers and ranchers know this. This policy is very misguided and the Forest Service needs to reexamine this policy in light of recent research by the Fish and Wildlife Department.

There's gotta be a more humane way to go about this! And where do you think that poisonous residue will end up after the Prairie Dogs die? Does the term "well-water" & dying crops mean anything to you?
