Help Resettle Syrian Refugees

As the number of Syrian refugees reaches 3.8 million, many countries have decided that the appropriate response to the crisis is to simply turn their backs on those fleeing the escalating violence.

Amnesty International is calling on countries around the world to collectively resettle 380,000 refugees from Syria by the end of 2016.

Germany has pledged to admit 30,000 Syrians on humanitarian grounds, a number that is higher than the quotas of the rest of Europe, Australia and Canada combined.

Our government has offered just 1,500 refugee places per year for three years, only 1.2% of the total identified as in need of resettlement.

Call on the Australian Government to provide 10,000 resettlement places to Syrian refugees, in addition to its existing humanitarian quota.

As well as facing violence, torture and murder, Syrians are now at risk of starvation if they stay in the country. With few other options, millions are forced to flee to neighbouring countries and live in unacceptable conditions in refugee camps.

Syria's neighbours have so far taken on 97% of the refugees, with Jordan holding more than 500,000 people and Lebanon over a million.

Urge Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton MP, to increase resettlement and humanitarian places for Syrian refugees.
Dear Minister,

As the number of Syrian refugees reaches 4 million, a generation of children is growing up in despair. Too many families are languishing without access to healthcare, education or adequate shelter.

Countries hosting the vast majority of refugees – Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq – are at breaking point. They need help.

The Australian Government must do more to help ease this crisis.

Amnesty International is calling on countries around the world to come together to resettle 380,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016.

I call on the Australian Government to contribute to this effort by providing 10,000 emergency resettlement places to Syrian refugees, in addition to Australia’s existing humanitarian intake.
