Repeal the "Defense Of Marriage Act"

Target: President Obama and the U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Help bring hope to gay couples by asking Congress and the President to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Overturning DOMA would end a range of discriminatory practices against gay couples and mitigate the damage caused by recent anti-gay ballot measures.

DOMA explicitly prohibits the Federal Government and all federal agencies from extending any federal marriage-based benefits, privileges and rights to same-sex couples. This means tax, pension, visitation, inheritance and legal standing rights granted to opposite-sex couples are denied to gay couples.

"Do I support granting same-sex benefits? Absolutely positively. Look, in an Obama-Biden administration, there will be absolutely no distinction from a constitutional standpoint or a legal standpoint between a same-sex and a heterosexual couple. . . " - Joe Biden, VP Debates 2008

Ask Congress and President Obama to repeal DOMA.

New legislation has been introduced to repeal DOMA. To take action, please go to: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/880742034.
Congress and President Obama,

I am an American concerned about preserving civil rights for all our citizens. An attempt to strip some Americans of their rights will eventually threaten the rights enjoyed by all of us.

Therefore, President Obama, please act on your prior opposition to DOMA:

The Defense Of Marriage Act "should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor. I will also oppose any proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gays and lesbians from marrying. This is an effort to demonize people for political advantage, and should be resisted ... .

When Members of Congress passed DOMA, they were not interested in strengthening family values or protecting civil liberties. They were only interested in perpetuating division and affirming a wedge issue."

Please help bring hope to the GLBT community by repealing DOMA.

Thank you.
We signed the “Repeal the "Defense Of Marriage Act"” petition!

I've never had to vote on or grant approval to a heterosexual marriage, and no one should vote on or have to receive government approval to get married! I don't discriminate and neither should the USA!

Please protect the rights of all people. Don't let the limited scope of some people's mind dictate policy for the rest of the country.

Please know that I am not gay, but I have friends and relatives who are and I want them to be able to share in the same joys and be able to take care of their loved ones the way the rest of us are able to. As it is, they are denied marriage and are unable to make life decisions to the ones they love. This needs to change. Repealing DOMA will not weaken family values, but instead strengthen families of all sorts and protect civil liberties.

Equality under the law. The DOMA continues to reinforce discrimination against GLBT individuals and the community as a whole.

The government should not be able to tell people whom they can and cannot marry. Marriage is a personal decision and is something that is between the two involved. The government telling people whom they can and cannot marry is like when there used to be laws against people of different races marrying. It is discrimination and just because a politicians may be personally against homosexual marriage, or it might be against their religions, does not mean that the government should control it. The government should not be making laws based on personal opinions or religious views. We do have separation of church and state, and the government should be looking out for the rights of all Americans, not just the ones who agree with the politicians.

The government has no right in telling us wo we should and shouldn't love. Love is love, no matter what gender!

Equality before the Law. It's as simple as that. The US government has no place to dictate morality to its citizens. Denying these couples the right to these benefits is inhumane, and should not be allowed. We were once a progressive country, and wowed the world with the concept of religious freedom. It appears that is the furthest we were willing to go. Stop treading backwards and move our country forward again.

There is no reason for this act to still be a part of US law. The only possible reason is religious, and this is no decent basis to make a law in a rational, and mostly secular world. Please ensure that this is repealed.

Jesus said,"Love one another as I have loved you." He didn't say,"Except for LGBTs." All committed couples deserve partner rights. Gay couples have a better track record than Straight couples!!
