In President Bush's State of the Union Address, he promised an emergency response to AIDS. Yet he has consistently offered far less money than is needed to fight this epidemic. Thanks to public outcry, the U.S. provided more money to fight AIDS in 2004 than Bush originally requested. Our actions do make a difference - we need to raise our voices again and ask for a real emergency response to this crisis in the 2005 budget!
President Bush has only requested $2.6 billion to fight global AIDS in the 2005 budget, much less than what global health experts say is needed as a fair share contribution from the U.S. Please sign this petition to call on the U.S. to increase funding to fight global AIDS and give half to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Dear President Bush:
I am deeply disappointed that you plan to request only $2.6 billion to fight global AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in your 2005 budget. This is much less than what global health experts say is needed as a fair share contribution in 2005 from the U.S. for international health programs.
In the State of the Union Address, you promised an emergency response to AIDS. I urge you to increase your global AIDS, TB and malaria spending proposal for 2005 from $2.6 billion to $5.4 billion. Half of this $5.4 billion should go to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, because the U.S. cannot fight this pandemic on its own. This is the best way to support an effective, collaborative, international response to AIDS - one that is based on what works to save lives, and not partisan politics.
