No Permanent Military Bases in Iraq!

"The first thing we have to do is end this war. And the right person to end it is someone who had the judgment to oppose it from the beginning." - Barack Obama, October 2, 2007

Just weeks ago, the Bush administration opened the door to establishing permanent military bases in Iraq. Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, the administration's deputy national security adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan, stated that permanent military bases in Iraq will be "on the negotiating table" during talks next year on the long-term security relationship between the U.S. and Iraq.

We need real leadership to get us out of Iraq. Barack Obama opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning. He has a clear, realistic plan to end it. Under a Barack Obama administration, the occupation of Iraq will end and there will be no permanent military bases inside Iraq.

Join Barack Obama in telling the Bush administration: no permanent military bases in Iraq!
Dear President Bush,

I am opposed to permanent military bases in Iraq. I write today to call on your administration to clearly and unequivocally state that it will neither seek nor maintain permanent bases in Iraq.

On November 26, your administration released the Declaration of Principles for a Long-Term Relationship of Cooperation and Friendship Between the Republic of Iraq and the United States of America. That day, in clarifying this agreement, Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, deputy national security adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan, stated that permanent military bases in Iraq will be "on the negotiating table" during next year's talks between the United States and Iraq.

Your administration later stated that the United States does not "seek" military bases, but so far has not clearly stated that America will not accept or maintain permanent bases either.

Senator Barack Obama has been very clear: under an Obama administration, "the war as we understand it will be over. We will not have permanent bases inside Iraq. The occupation will be done."

I urge you to publicly state that the United States will not seek, accept or maintain permanent military bases in Iraq.

Sincerely,
