Keep Contraceptives on Drugstore Shelves

Target: Bobby Ison, Chair of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
Sponsored by: Care2

A disturbing trend has begun. "Pro-life" drugstores, which do not stock contraceptives like condoms, birth control pills or the morning after pill, are popping up across the nation.

A full 98 percent of women of reproductive age who have had intercourse have used a contraceptive. By not stocking contraceptives, these "pro-life" pharmacies are denying virtually all of their female customers items they turn to for reproductive health.

The scariest part is that these drug stores could fuel a trend that could deprive entire regions of basic contraception.

Virginia has no stocking regulations, allowing one "pro-life" drugstore, DMC Pharmacy, to keep contraceptives off the shelves. If the Virginia Board of Pharmacy enacted stocking regulations, it would send a message to legislative bodies across the nation. Tell the Virginia Board of Pharmacy that drugstores in its state have a duty to stock basic health care products.

Dear Chairperson Ison,

I am deeply concerned about the rising trend of pharmacies that do not provide contraception, including condoms, birth control pills and the morning-after pill.

Contraceptives prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, making them vital to reproductive health. It seems virtually all women agree: 98% of women who are of reproductive age and have had intercourse have used a contraceptive.

However, DMC Pharmacy, a drugstore about to open in Chantilly, Virginia, is denying its customers contraceptives they choose to use.

To not stock contraceptives is to discriminate against women. In those circumstances, I would certainly never shop in your store.

This invalidates both gender’s right to make a choice, discrimination of personal preferences goes’ against any concept of freedom the American constitution was supposed to support - this is a crime against women and men to have a choice in avoiding unwanted pregnancies. In a recession creating children people can not afford to maintain, is the moral objective of such pharmacies which will lead to pain and suffering for some of those children concerned, instead of transparent freedom of choice - burn them would be my choice, they have no value to communities and think they no better than everyone else - it's supposed to be a public service not a public abuse.

I have found contraceptives in other countries in the world. Why are some Ultra-Conservatives so naive in preventing unwanted pregnancies?

I really find this one hard to believe. Who makes these choices for the pharmacies and how can they impose a personal belief on the general public? It is a neutral business there to serve us. Are they trying to SAVE lives by this action? We all know that it will only lead to unwanted pregnancies, abortion, STD's, babies and children put up for adoption, and more world population. Because, let's face it, people are not going to suddenly decide to abstain. To me, it does not seem that this action by pharmacies would be a very successful one, it is not realistic.

Let's not just be thrown back into the dark ages, for crying out loud! Women deserve the right to choose to use contraceptives, as do men. It's preposterous and unconscionable for customers to not have such options at their disposal!
