Reject Gas Guzzling in the Energy Bill!

New Energy Bill Weakens Current Gas Mileage Standards!

We have a window of opportunity to push for change before Congress sends their final energy bill to the President. Urge Congress to support STRONG, fuel economy laws that:
  • DECREASE our dependence on oil.
  • IMPROVE fuel economy standards to REDUCE POLLUTION, and SAVE MONEY at the pump!
  • REJECT the provision that FREEZES pickup truck mileage at its current level, even though 76% of pickup drivers want trucks with better gas mileage.

Despite overwhelming public support for requiring automakers to produce cars, SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks that get better gas mileage, both the House and Senate passed bills that actually WEAKEN current standards.

Congress must pass an energy bill that dramatically reduces our oil consumption, reduces global warming emissions, and saves consumers money at the gas pump! A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences concludes that US automakers have the technology to cost effectively improve the gas mileage of our cars and light trucks to nearly 40 mpg over the next 10 to 15 years without compromising performance or safety.

Sign this petition now to give consumers clean driving choices!

Thank you!

20,406 12:55 am PDT, Aug 10   Rodolfo Reyes New York Dear Union of Concerned Scientists, I came across your petition to reject a new bill that threatens to relax the current gas efficiency standards and must declare that one does not need to be a scientist to realize the consequences of this bill. For many years now, the major auto manufacturers have had alternative solutions to the gas engine but have done little to bring these new technologies to the marketplace. In the US cars continue to get bigger and their engines continue to need grater and greater quantities of gas to keep the running. Even the new “fuel efficient” hybrid engine is ridicule to the severity of the global energy crisis. These new engines merely provide a boost to smaller engine sizes but do not save gas. In other words, aside from the Toyota Prius, a four cylinder hybrid engine can output the same power as a six cylinder but still uses the same gas as a four cylinder. Lowering the efficiency standards would not only allow the current resource depletion but would worsen an already failing global ecosystem. I endorse your petition and thank you for bringing this issue to light.

Reject Gas Guzzling in the Energy Bill!

Dear Senator/Representative:

I am disappointed that both the House and Senate squandered an important opportunity to include provisions in the energy bill that would have required the auto industry to produce cars and trucks that get significantly greater gas mileage.

As passed, both the House and Senate bills actually increase our dependence on oil. This is unacceptable. Congress should pass an energy bill that dramatically reduces our oil consumption, reduces climate change gases, and saves consumers money at the gas pump.

I understand that Congress is now working to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions before sending a final bill to the President for his signature. I urge you to do what you can to ensure that the energy bill does not contain provisions that weaken current fuel economy law and allow the auto industry to continue to produce gas-guzzling cars and trucks based on outdated technology. In particular, reject the Senate provisions that exempt pickup trucks from any future increases in fuel economy, extend existing loopholes, and create more hurdles to higher fuel economy standards.

It is time for the auto industry to put its technical know-how and engineering prowess to work for consumers, the environment, and greater energy security. No more excuses.

Sincerely,
