End the use of animals in Ringling Bros. Circuses!

Target: Kenneth Feld, Chairman & CEO, Feld Entertainment (Ringling Bros. owner)
Sponsored by: Animal Protection Institute
On January 4th, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus kicked off its 2006 season in Tampa, Florida, launching yet another year of traveling the country with captive wild and exotic animals.

The use of animals in the circus is an unnecessary and inhumane practice that is harmful to both the animals and the public. Wild animals are trained to perform unnatural tricks to entertain crowds through the use of barbaric tools - including bullhooks, chains, and electric prods. These tricks are unnatural, frightening, and even painful; but the industryÂ’s mantra is "the show must go on."

Even worse, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has documented that all major circuses have been cited for deficiencies in their animal care ranging from the deprivation of clean water and fresh food to clean living quarters and even the most basic shelter from weather. Even these minimal requirements are noted as not being met. It is no secret that animals in circuses spend most of their days in boxcars, cages, or chains, in conditions very different from those in which they would naturally live.

Please join us in telling Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to put a stop to such cruelty and cease using wild and exotic animals in its circuses!

Dear Mr. Feld:

I am writing to urge you to put a halt to animal cruelty and stop using wild and exotic animals in your circus.

Animals exploited for human entertainment face appalling treatment, pose threats to public health and safety, are currently not adequately regulated by state and federal laws, and do not conserve endangered species as is so often claimed.

I strongly believe that the standard industry tools and methods used to initially "break" and train animals throughout their lives, including the bullhook, chaining, food and water deprivation, use of whips, clubs and blunt objects, and electric prods, are incredibly inhumane. In addition, subjecting circus animals to travel for up to 11 months of the year for thousands of hours, over long distances, is unspeakably cruel. As you know, these animals may be chained while not performing, transported in vehicles that lack climate control, and forced to stand or lie in their own waste.

Wild animals used in public displays are dangerous — and even deadly. Recent incidents nationwide highlight the need for tighter restrictions on the exhibition of these animals. In addition to the many documented escapes and attacks by captive animals used for exhibition, elephants may carry tuberculosis (TB), and can infect humans with the bacterial disease.

Circuses are entertainment, not education. Watching wild animals perform unnatural tricks only teaches our children that it is acceptable to exploit animals; it does not teach respect for animals, nor does it help animals in the wild. Animal-free circuses and entertainment, such as Cole Brothers Circus and Cirque du Soleil, are growing as the use of wild animals becomes recognized as archaic, unsafe and inhumane.

For the sake of human safety and animal welfare, please stop using animals in Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circuses.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

The mistreatment of elephants and other circus animals makes me sick. I will never attend another circus that uses animals in any way.

The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment. Please help show support for kinder, more humane entertainment on TV and in the arena! Thank you for your help!

It is inhumane treatment of animals, which is illegal. If they continue using animals, period, and to train them inhumanely, I will continue to seek that they be charged, tried, convicted, and incarcerated.

The obvious reason for this gross exploitation of the natural world is money. If people stopped handing over their cash this cruelty would end overnight and the 'people' who derive a sense of self importance from humiliating majestic animals, will have to get real jobs.

More than a year ago I took my children to see this for the first time. I remembered enjoying it when I was little and my husband came home with tickets, so we went. The only thing I could think of the entire time was how cruelly the animals were treated. The cats were at the point where one almost attacked the man ordering it around and he whipped it in the face quickly. After that, I told my husband to never take us there again.

I was appalled to see video footage of the cruelty that takes place in training these poor animals. Also the conditions that they are kept in sickens me. This isn't the "Greatest Show on Earth", this is the "Cruelest Show on Earth". I don't know how these people manage to sleep at night. But you know what they say "what goes around comes around".

Stop animal cruelty. Animals should not be abused, tortured, humiliated. We should protect them, feed them, give them veterinarian attention, etc. We should not use animals just for fun, for business, or else. Please be human!!

Why?? Don't you feel bad. When a child gets abused or neglected do you feel disgusted?? It's the same with ANY animal it's like you are killing or abusing a little child.

Yes you need to teach them, but you can find other ways to do it!!! How would you feel if we strapped you to things and started whipping you and doing al the things you do right back to you?!?!?! Yea,I bet you wouldn't like it very much. You need to take the animal's needs and feelings into consideration!

Keeping wild animals in any type of container while traveling is cruel. My family will never see a circus with any animals performing.

It is cruel to use animals in a manner that does not respect their natural abilities nor provide them with natural habitat. Further, it is a disservice to children to show them animals in this manner.

Its isn't right for wild animals to be treated that way. The only reason you should be able to have exotic animals in your circus is you are treating them PROBERELY.

Here's something straight from my mouth and my beliefs.: Together we can help to make sure that another innocent life isn't lost at the hands of an abuser. See anyone can be abusive, it's up to us to make sure they don't have a chance to hurt or kill their next victim. If you think a child, animal,or person is being abused, Please Speak Up ! You may be their only link to freedom. Remember all animals and children have feelings too, even if we don't speak the same language. If you see the fear of questions within their innocent trusting eyes,or feel the pain theyre in with the echo of their haunting screams and silent cries, you realize the abuse needs to stop. NO MATTER WHAT, we need to be the voice for those who cannot speak. Abuse doesn't choose its victims and it doesn't discriminate,we need to stand up and speak for those who without a choice. Whether it's a child or animal, it may just take an outsider to see through the dangerous cycle./Working together we can make a difference. I want to show those few people who turn their heads and look the other way, that the problem will still be there when they turn back around. It won't disappear. Animals and children have feelings too! Would YOU like it if someone performed painful and/or deadly experiments on you or abused you so bad you just didn't know what to do? Would YOU like it if someone just stood by, and watched as you were being tortured or killed, and didn't care enough to speak up for your defense let alone listen to your cries for help? Whether it's an animal or even another human sometimes you just gotta break the rules and do what you think is right, even when others disagree with you. Your actions may help prevent another death. SPEAK UP for those who can't or for those without a voice ! This is going to sound coldhearted but if I had my way when it came down to ANY form of abuse EVERY victim would be able to inflict the exact same pain upon their abusers and make them suffer in silence the same agony and pain that they went through. Now if you allow it, participate in, watch, abuse, torture, kill an animal then you'd also be charged/convicted as tho he/she was a human. Afterall that innocent animal you kill, most likely is someone's family member.Domestic or wild,it doesn't matter.

The idea that it is funny to see wild animals coerced into acting like clumsy humans, or thrilling to see powerful beasts reduced to cringing cowards by a whipcracking trainer is primitive and medieval.
