Act now: Support the Green Climate Fund

When disaster strikes, it's the world's poorest people who pay the highest price: they're the most vulnerable to losing lives, homes, and livelihoods. And the governments in poor countries are the least prepared for and most susceptible to the effects of climate change.

We are experiencing some of the warmest years on record and are facing a record El Niño this year, during which at least 10 million people are at risk of going hungry.

The faster we all act – rich and poor countries alike – the greater the chances are of avoiding the most harmful effects of climate change. That's why the Green Climate Fund was set up: to help poor countries prepare for climate change and cut their emissions.

As of November, the Green Climate Fund has raised $10.2 billion in pledges from 38 governments. On behalf of the United States, President Obama has pledged a total of $3 billion to help establish the Green Climate Fund, and has requested $500 million in his current budget. Congress now must follow-through on the first installment of this pledge.

Write to your Members of Congress now: Tell them to approve President Obama's funding request for the Green Climate Fund and maintain U.S. leadership in addressing the global climate challenge.

Dear Member of Congress:

As a constituent who cares deeply about fighting poverty and climate change, both here at home and around the world, I write to you today to ask you to support full funding for the Green Climate Fund.

People living in poverty suffer disproportionately from climate disasters that threaten their lives, homes, health, and livelihoods. And the governments in poor countries are the least prepared for and most susceptible to the effects of climate change.

We are experiencing some of the warmest years on record and are facing a record El Niño this year, during which at least 10 million people are at risk of going hungry.

Rich countries like the United States must step up and help poor countries be prepared and protect their citizens against climate disasters. That’s why the Green Climate Fund was created in 2009: to build the capacity of developing countries to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.

President Obama's $500 million request for the GCF represents a small but critical investment to maintain our country’s leadership and commitment to global climate action. The moment is now for bold climate change action. Please support President Obama’s funding request for the Green Climate Fund.
