It's time to act on Australia's appalling domestic violence record

Australia’s domestic and family violence (DFV) rap sheet is damning:
  • One in three Australian women has experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and one in five has experienced sexual violence
  • DFV is our biggest cause of homelessness among women
  • Intimate partner violence contributes to more death, disability and illness than any other preventable risk factor for women aged 15 to 44
  • On average, at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner6 Disturbingly, this national crisis is only getting worse.
Mission Australia believes there is no place for domestic and family violence in our country. We believe every individual is intrinsically valuable, and work hard each day pursuing the safety, wellbeing and independence of every person we help.

We’ve been caring for Australians in need for more than 155 years, and last financial year alone supported 26,605 people across our 68 dedicated DFV and Families & Children services.

We know what works, and what needs to be done.

We’re calling for more funding for areas proven to make a significant impact, including early intervention programs, increased investment in supported accommodation, and a greater consistency of support services to ensure that help is readily available in all communities across the country in schools and behaviour change programs for perpetrators.

Tell our leaders that you want more action on DFV and more funding for services proven to help Australians who need it most.
