Support Health Research That Fuels Hope

Finding cures to disease does not happen overnight. Long before therapeutic drugs are approved and made available comes the initial work of scientific inquiry and discovery. It is this initial phase of biomedical breakthroughs that have the potential to improve human health.

Meeting that demand for discovery, the Scripps Research Institute has cutting edge research programs that focus on basic research, novel drugs and diagnostics. This research provides hope to millions who suffer from Alzheimer's disease, asthma, heart disease, breast cancer, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other diseases.

In the current economic climate, it is important now more than ever to support scientific discovery and the hope it provides for diseases we have yet to cure. For that reason, we welcome President Obama's support for advancing research.

Join us in thanking President Obama for his support of science – and help the Scripps Research Institute continue to expand the frontiers of science and create hope for millions.

Dear President Obama,

We applaud the positive stance you have taken toward the role of science in your administration, both in the presidential campaign and since your inauguration. In order to meet the 21st century challenges in health and biotechnology, it is critical that the United States leads in science and research.

[Your personal comments will be added to the letter here.]

In our current economic climate, it is important now more than ever to recognize the contributions of research, and the hope it provides for diseases we have yet to cure. Basic research funding increases for the National Institutes of Health can expand our national research capacity at a time when our country needs greater support to connect the ever-widening gap between discovery and eventual application and cure.

Therapeutic drug discovery does not occur overnight. To improve health and cure disease, it can take years of discovery. And in order to build upon the research capacity of today, we must continue to grow our investment in the work done by the scientific community that studies disease.

We understand the vast challenges your administration and this country face. We appreciate your assurances that science will play a more important role in your administration than in years past, and look forward to working with you to address those challenges and lead the United States into the forefront of biomedical research and discovery. Together, we can provide hope for the millions of Americans who are affected by disease, and provide a brighter future for generations to come.
