Reinstate Federal Protections for Northern Rockies Wolves

Target: Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
In March, President Obama's Interior Department approved the Bush Administration's discredited plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana. And now, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has announced it will begin selling an estimated 70,000 permits to hunt and kill wolves in Idaho, allowing 220 wolves to be killed starting on September 1st in the first-ever state regulated hunt of gray wolves in the continental United States.

Idaho's announcement comes on the heels of Montana's plan to hunt 75 wolves starting in October. These numbers would be over and above the wolves already killed each year by other means of lethal control, as well as natural deaths. All these actions combined threaten the recovery of the still vulnerable regional wolf population in the Northern Rockies.

This could be the worst wolf massacre in the Lower 48 United States since the 1930s. Please send your message to Interior Secretary Salazar now urging him to immediately reinstate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies!

UPDATE 10/6/09: At least 21 wolves have been killed in Idaho and nine in Montana.
deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 25,000

Dear Secretary Salazar,

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about protecting America's wildlife, I urge you to immediately reinstate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies.

On March 6th, 2009, you approved the Bush Administration's discredited plan to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Greater Yellowstone states of Idaho and Montana -- a decision that could lead to the deaths of more than 1,000 wolves! And now, Idaho Fish and Game has just announced that beginning September 1, Idaho will allow 220 wolves to be killed in the first-ever state regulated hunt of gray wolves in the continental United States.

Dude, really? What gives you the right to allow wolves to be killed for no good reason other than sport? These wolves are living, breathing animals who have just as much right to life as you do. You are just like Hitler, calling for the massacre of the Jews (in this case, the wolves) for no good reason at all. People like you make me sick.

Wolves may be animals but just like us they have a life to live. They're not just animals they can be anything, but thats only if you're willing to give them a chance.

Were it a decision in order to properly control the population in order to maintain an equilibrium within the ecosystem, then perhaps such an act would not be so abhorred. But even so, ecosystems will eventually stabilize themselves out through over-eating and famine. It was estimated that some 1,650 wolves call continental United States their home in the September of 2009, with a growth rate of 20% a year. That's about an increase of 330 wolves. Now, with the combined hunting amount of both Montana and Idaho, 295 Wolves would be hunted legally for mere "entertainment." Along with that 295, could one not think that there would be more killings for legal issues, and local ones as well? Ranchers protecting their livestock, perhaps? But I digress. Looking back at the alotted 295 killings, how many does that leave to increase the population? 35 a year. I do not believe that's the kind of growth we would like to see.

Have we not lost enough species as it is? Since the federal protection was removed, the wolves have been hunted to near extinction again! Fact is, we, humans, are trespassing on their land, not the other way around. Can we really justify killing these wolves when all they are doing is trying to survive?

I belive that their are not enough wolves to be hunted. The population is going to drop horribly if you allow hunters to take so many wolfs, they still need to be protected!!

I love animals and would like to take care of em, even if its just me, in my opinion, killing any animal is wrong, so thats why iam standing up to these wolves, because i dont want them to be slaughtered, i love all animals, so please, stop the killing of wolves.

Wolves have been on the Endangered Species Act for a long time, for good reason. Just now they're starting to come back, and if we allow this massacre to happen...I don't want to think about it.

Please do not allow the hunting of wolves. Far too many people abuse this power and it hurts more people then it helps.

Wolves are a necessary part of the ecosystem they reside in. Similar attempts to "control" wolf populations in other areas, such as Denali National Park, resulted in the weakening of prey population, exponential population growth of prey to the point of starving those populations out, and just generally upsetting the balance of the environment.

I love wolves! They are beautiful creatures and they do not deserve to be murdered! ESPECIALLY in such this horrid manner! Wolves stay out of our way and respect us, they kill us only if they really have to, and YOU are killing THEm just for GAME and other merchandise?? This is horrible. Every person who hunts a wolf for game or trade is a murderer, and needs to be put to a death sentence! Hear me and my wolf-loving friends out!

The rivalry of farmers and wolves has been a long one. If wolves are on property I believe in the right to shoot, but not to hunt innocent ones. Perhaps farmers should get better fencing and cattle guard dogs too?
