Pass a Spending Bill that Protects Funding for Programs that Save Kids' Lives

Complications from babies born too early account for 1 million deaths each year. The good news is that we know what works to help premature babies survive and thrive. Babies like Henry, born premature in Kenya, are lucky that their mothers are being taught an effective, low-cost solution called Kangaroo Mother Care. Henry's mom, Evelyne, used this technique of constant skin-to-skin contact to keep him warm. Without Kangaroo Mother Care, Henry could have died.

But funding for health and nutrition programs like the one Henry's mom benefited from is now in danger. If Congress doesn't pass a spending bill before they go home for the year, these programs could get cut. We urgently need your help to protect this funding.

With U.S. leadership, the world has made major progress in reducing preventable deaths of children. But if Congress waits until next spring to pass a budget bill, the funding gains we made this year may be lost. This means moms and kids around the world will miss out on vaccines, treatment for diarrhea, antibiotics for pneumonia and more, putting their lives in danger.

Please sign our petition to House Speaker Ryan and Senate Leader McConnell to urge them to pass a budget that protects funding for health and nutrition programs that save kids' lives.

Dear Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell,

Every child deserves a strong start in life, no matter where they live. Tragically, every day 16,000 children die from preventable causes, like complications from preterm birth, pneumonia and malnutrition.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We know what works to end needless deaths of moms and children. Already, with U.S. leadership, the world has seen more than a 50% decline in preventable child deaths since 1990.

We encourage you to build on this major success by passing a budget this year that protects funding for health and nutrition programs that save kids' lives.

Update #17 years ago
The House of Representatives and Senate have voted to wait until next year to pass a budget for the full Fiscal Year 2017, putting these vital health and nutrition programs at risk. Thankfully, the short-term funding bill passed didn't make any cuts to these programs. But the fight isn't over yet - we need to continue to put pressure on our decision makers to keep funding for health and nutrition programs safe. Please share the petition as widely as you can to help save kids' lives!
