Please show support for NYC Planning Director Amanda M. Burden in saving Coney Island!!

Target: Amanda Burden, Planning Director, City of New York
Sponsor: sharon carlaine
  • Signatures: 4,340
  • Goal: 10,000
  • Deadline: 3-8-2008
Coney Island has been a substantial part of New York City culture and history since the 1860’s. Now that legacy is being threatened by the real estate company Thor Equities, LLC. The bullying, double-speaking and intimidating of Thor Equities is not unlike the stories of Coney Island from the turn of the last century. This time the amusement park itself is being threatened.

Although this NYC Planning Director Amanda Burden has not granted the Amusement District rezoning for the luxury condos Thor Equities has in mind, the company has already started the process of evicting the hardworking companies, that made Coney Island what it is, off the boardwalk, as well as starting demolition in the district.

In accordance with their deception and their crooked actions, they are also trying to use the amusement park as a bargaining tool against the city. If they are not granted the rezoning for the residential status, they are threatening to close the amusement park.

These behaviors are appalling, and should not be tolerated. Thor Equities should be used as an example against corporation dictatorship in the planning of the future of New York City. The Planning Director of NYC has taken a strong stand against the rezoning of this area, and we, the undersigned, are supporting her decision to stand by the legacy of Coney Island. SAVE CONEY!!

4,343 12:31 pm PDT, May 18   Arne Starr Burbank I'm a native New Yorker who grew up going to Coney Island. I remember Steeplechase and the Parachute Drop. I remember cabanas on the beachfront. Coney Isalnd is as much a part of NY as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. It needs to be saved from this greedy company. Do what you can to save this Landmark of NY. We can't lose any more to corporate greed.

4,334 7:54 pm PDT, Mar 26 Ms. keyana henderson new york I think coney island should stay open. The reason i think so is because... i only been there once and that was the best day of my life. I had so much fun. Coney island has been open for a long time and i can tell u well enough that every person that goes there has a great time. Coney Island is not just a amusement park its more than that its a place filled of history and enjoyment to people of all ages. And this is the only amusement part in brooklyn. Any other amusement park in new york you would have to drive hours to get to this place means so much to me and i only been there once. This is a once in a life time opertonity. This place is better than being the presidents best friend or saving some one's life or getting your life saved. This is a place where u can go to the beach and relax or having a trill and going on rides to have fun or take a walk on the bored walk or taking your child to go there for their first time. This is the best place ever. I DONT CARE IF YOU TAKE IT DOWN AND BUILD IT BIGGER SOME WHERE ELSE. Its so fun that i would die to live there. I would kill to be there one more time. I am 13 years old and i know exactly what i am talking about. SAVE CONEY ISLAND. SAVE CONEY ISLAND. SAVE CONEY ISLAND. SAVE CONEY ISLAND. SAVE CONEY ISLAND. AND BE HEARD FOR THIS ONCE IN A LIFE TIME OPERTONITY. I think coney island should stay open. The reason i think so is because... i only been there once and that was the best day of my life. 4,332 7:30 am PDT, Mar 10   Marion Siegel New York
4,331 3:49 pm PST, Mar 2   debora jackson Brooklyn Because Coney Island is so quintessentially NYC, because it so iconic and wonderful that artists and wirters have long paid triubte to it. Because not everything in NYC should be slick and glossy and plastic and disneyfied.
4,330 2:51 pm PST, Feb 24   Allison Ace New York its a historical site in new yorks history and it should not be removed. please help preserve this beautiful place
4,329 10:44 am PST, Feb 23   David M. Harris Brooklyn Thor has decided not to go ahead. The park and the surrounding storefronts on the boardwalk are closed. In October, just before Halloween, there were already hooligans on the boardwalk. I fear that they will be the only ones if commerce isn't restored. I remember the boardwalk in the '80's and early '90's before the "Renaissance". I have traveled and lived in many places throughout the US, and Coney island's beach and boardwalk are absolutely unique. There is a balanced police presence and public acceptance of the entire spectrum of life in New York. I have enjoyed the boardwalk in large groups when it was dangerous as the Bay13 Group, and when it was safe with friends and children till the wee hours of the morning. Kids and adults on the boardwalk forming ad hock groupings, and children playing day and night. I have brought visiters from all over the world to swim and relax in my local beachfront, eat on my boardwalk, play volleyball or ride the attractions and play the games. The re-opened Freak Show and Shoot The Freak. Dancing and drinks on the boardwalk at night, and all other manner of specialties and attractions. I recieve letters from people all over the world that they will be in New York and want directions to my beach. Please do not take away this invaluable resource. Amanda Burton uses New Urbanist principles to re-invigorate New York's many neighborhoods. I don't always agree with the execution of these regulations, but all New Yorkers are in her debt for paying so much attention to correcting the mix and helping to atract out of state investment in our neighborhoods.
4,328 8:41 pm PST, Feb 22 Ms. Jen Strum Brooklyn
4,327 4:04 pm PST, Feb 22 Ms. Christina Clarke Far Rockaway It would be a great shame to continue the trend of destroying iconic & historic landmarks that represent so much to so many people in NY, the States, and other countries. What's next? Ellis Island & Lady Liberty?
4,326 8:36 am PST, Feb 16 Mrs. Rebecca Everhart Sellersburg
4,325 9:25 pm PST, Jan 23 Ms. Anonymous Denver There are many treasures in this country that are destroyed. This should not be one of them. Please keep this dream alive.
4,324 2:09 pm PST, Jan 20   Anonymous Brooklyn The current CIDC/Thor Equities plan completely ignors the Coney Island brand name that is known worldwide.Building inside the currentC7 amusement district will completely destroy Coney Island's historic value as well as from a financial asspect. The current new Municipal Arts Society's proposal is correct in size and scope. It calls for a 25 arce amusement park and all retail and condos outside of this footprint. This plan could draw 3.5 million visitors annualy with a revenue stream of well over $200,000,000.00 annually. In addition the Corporate sponsors could easily produce another $50,000,000.00 a year!To squander this once in a century opportunity on retail stores and condos within the current C7 ammusement district is ludicrious and finanically irresponsible! The CIDC's plan for a nine acre amusement park space is unworkable and will relagate Coney Island to nothing more than a small Carnival amusement area. This plan lacks imagination and will not create any jobs for the area. The job creation lies with the ability to bring in tourists in addition to a percentage of the 20 million people who live in a fifty mile radius of Coney Island. The city is already awash in surplus retail and condo space and financing for this part of the redevelopment plan will not happen for decades. Thanks for your efforts in bringing this important issue of the failure of the current CIDC redevelopment plan to everyone's attention.

4,320 8:53 pm PST, Jan 9   Faina Bukher Durham I've spent a lot of great times there, and it's so much a part of Brooklyn.
4,319 12:45 pm PST, Jan 9 Ms. Katie Bradley Denton I've only had the best memories made here at Coney Island! Love the FreakShow!!!
4,318 10:14 am PST, Jan 9 Ms. Patricia Sener Brooklyn Coney Island is a unique, vibrant place with history and magic. I don't want to see condos. I don't want to see chain restaurants. I want to see small business able to thrive. Coney draws huge crowds in the summer, people come from all over the world to visit. Will they come to visit a condo? Or a Friendly's? Why mess with what is working with Coney? As someone who lives here, who moved here to be near this one-of-a-kind place, I don't want to see it destroyed. thanks for fighting the good fight.

4,316 8:58 pm PST, Jan 5   Edwin Dobb East Walkerville An essential feature of New York, where I lived for years.
4,315 10:34 am PST, Jan 5 Mr. Emil Bukher oakland To see whatever goes up there in its place will be a permanent reminder of memories lost, as well as yet another example of the triumph of greed and materialism over the human spirit. I am glad my daughter got to see it. Good luck!
4,314 10:18 am PST, Jan 5   kate barnes oakland it's part of everyone's history!! it's beautiful and magical. We are with you!!!
4,313 5:09 pm PST, Dec 31   jeremiah birnbaum brooklyn coney island should be preserved, and rededicated, in the spirit of all new york's children, their dreams, of summer days, and shoot-the-freaks, and clams handshucked by the sea. That Thor Equities has been allowed to begin the destruction of all that is remaining of what should be the people's playground, is appalling. Ms. Burden, I support and admire you for your outspoken stance. Please keep fighting for Coney!
4,312 8:34 am PST, Dec 23   Jennifer O'Donnell Dallas Coney Island is a piece of history and once it's gone it's gone! We need to preserve what we have left. Thanks!
4,311 2:52 pm PST, Dec 11   Tracy Barber New York We dont live here to live in a mall environment we live here because its supposed to old world, preservation, historical, european. NYC has become histrionic and wipes out its own history and we're all alienated by those changes. We might as well be living in anywhere, usa at some point. Thank you for your efforts.
4,310 6:58 pm PST, Dec 2   Ana Owusu-Tyo Bloomington I grew up in Coney Island and it is a beautiful, historic part of out country that we cannot allow to be destroyed. We must preserve our landmarks while we still have them Thank you so much for trying to save such an interesting part of our national history.
4,309 2:11 pm PST, Nov 22 Ms. deborah gorelik brooklyn i have spent alot of time in coney island it is special to me altho, no one else seems to care I DO!! i have seen so much there and i want to continue the history, fun and games at astro land!!!!!! please keep it!!
4,308 5:01 pm PST, Nov 19 Ms. Linda Laura McGrade Clearwater Beach MEMORIES from childhood to PRESENT ! 4 generations in my family, great family FUN ! Please Amanda SAVE SAVE SAVE Wish I knew you. I will HELP in any way.
4,307 8:28 pm PST, Nov 18 Ms. Amber Toomey Cumming Coney is an amazing place that many of us grew up with. I couldn't even imagine it not being there. That would be unbearable. It's created memories for all of us and is truly sacred. Good luck and thanks so much!
4,306 4:16 pm PST, Nov 17 Ms. Jennifer Michaels New York It has the potential to be as great as it once was. It's a truly historic and unique part of our city. Good luck Amanda. We all really appreciate your efforts.
4,305 3:33 pm PST, Nov 17 Mr. Dan Chatman New York There are only a few neighborhoods that are so unique they contribute in an obvious manner to the identity of our vast and wonderful city and its people. Coney Island stands, perhaps, at the top of such a list. Amid rapidly-expanding real estate development, globalization of the economy and modernizing of practically everything, is it REALLY necessary to destroy the fabric of this special place that has evolved through multiple generations? Things are broken, yes. But it's a shame to think they can be repaired only by destroying what lured everyone there in the first place. We need, and deeply appreciate your efforts.
4,304 11:02 pm PST, Nov 8 Ms. Stana Weisburd Brooklyn My grandparents lives on Neptune Avenue and I grew up spending a lot of time with them. They had a terrace on the 21st floor that looked out on Coney Island. You could see & hear people on the Cyclone. I always loved going there and getting on so many of the rides. The Eldorado bumper cars, going for the gold ring at the merry go round, I could go on & on. This landmark has meant so much to generations. It can continue to do so. Save our Brooklyn Heritage! Thanks Amanda!
4,303 6:46 am PDT, Oct 30   Regina Pellegrini Flemington Ny grandmother used to take me to Coney Island when I was a kid. The last time I was there was with my dad, which was also the last time he was there before he died. I was saddened by how run down it had become. Rather than tearing it down, I would like to see it revitalized so I would be able to take my kids there.
4,302 9:51 pm PDT, Oct 28   Mendon Kissling Brooklyn It is my favorite place in the whole world, and to think of what it may become makes me angry and sick. If you need any help, contact me via email.
4,301 6:54 am PDT, Oct 24   Gavin Sutter London A true piece of history, a real area of character in these modern times. In an age when even Beijing's Forbidden City contains its own Starbucks, let's try and preserve the remaining sparks of individuality wherever we may find them. Coney Island is one such spark, long may it be freed from the bland homogeny of redevelopment.
