Coney Island has been a substantial part of New York City culture and history since the 1860’s. Now that legacy is being threatened by the real estate company Thor Equities, LLC. The bullying, double-speaking and intimidating of Thor Equities is not unlike the stories of Coney Island from the turn of the last century. This time the amusement park itself is being threatened.

Although this NYC Planning Director Amanda Burden has not granted the Amusement District rezoning for the luxury condos Thor Equities has in mind, the company has already started the process of evicting the hardworking companies, that made Coney Island what it is, off the boardwalk, as well as starting demolition in the district.

In accordance with their deception and their crooked actions, they are also trying to use the amusement park as a bargaining tool against the city. If they are not granted the rezoning for the residential status, they are threatening to close the amusement park.

These behaviors are appalling, and should not be tolerated. Thor Equities should be used as an example against corporation dictatorship in the planning of the future of New York City. The Planning Director of NYC has taken a strong stand against the rezoning of this area, and we, the undersigned, are supporting her decision to stand by the legacy of Coney Island. SAVE CONEY!!

4,205 12:06 pm PDT, Jun 29 Jamel Wooten Brooklyn Coney Island is as much a part of New York as the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty and should be regarded as a historic landmark and protected as such. Dear Ms. Burden, I appreciate all that you're doing to preserve Coney Island and protect Brooklyn from further invasion from these money-hungry and opportunistic companies trying to cash in at the cost of a piece of our history. Please continue to push forward, you have my support. Thank you. Best wishes, Jamel C. Wooten

4,202 12:37 am PDT, Jun 25 Victoria Borkowski Covington My mom worked at the sideshow years ago,so Coney's been part of my life since I was a baby. The Mermaid Parade, eating out on the beach, riding and re-riding and riding again on the Cyclone, just looking at the glow of the park's lights at night have been some of the greatest moments of my life. If Coney were to go,it would just be truly heartbreaking. Go Amanda!Save Coney!!!
4,201 10:47 pm PDT, Jun 24 Dave Collins Russellville I have just visited Coney Island back on May 18, 2008. The Astroland Cyclone is one of the most popular, and one of the most memorable, historical roller coasters ever built in the US. Because this roller coaster does have a status of National Historic Landmark in NYC and is on the National Historic Register, the Coney Island Cyclone needs to be a National Historic Landmark in the US! Coney Island has been an American icon ever since the Roaring 20s. Memories will be destroyed if the current rezoning plan goes to fruition. So many people in the US know just how important Coney Island is in the historic sense! Don't ruin Coney Island, especially the Cyclone!

4,196 11:36 pm PDT, Jun 23 Rachel Zebede Brooklyn Going to Coney Island is like going into another world. It's special. I would hate to see its charm and magic erased by chain retail stores and high rise condos. Don't Give Up!
4,195 11:14 pm PDT, Jun 23 Sally Shelton Brooklyn
4,194 10:23 pm PDT, Jun 23 Kim Marks ontario Whenever I come to NYC I always go to Coney Island. It is a place like to other. Its heritage and history is important in showing a little blast from the past. It should be transformed into the magical place it once was, instead of getting rid of it. I swear there is no feeling like walking on the boardwalk, while watching the rides, and hearing laughter. I would like to help any way I can
4,193 7:14 pm PDT, Jun 23 Sarah Duford Brooklyn It's a historical site that would be ruined by the ever growing chain retail boom in NYC. It's part of what makes NYC so great and it would be criminal to replace that with luxury condo's that only a small percentage of the cities residents could even fathom living in. As it is we are losing our neighborhoods to condos and luxury apartments. If this continues there will be no place in NYC for "regular" people to live. Do the right thing! Don't ok this rezoning!
4,192 7:56 pm PDT, Jun 22 Anonymous Bradenton It's a part of New York's history, and holds so many memories for thousands of people.
4,191 6:52 pm PDT, Jun 22 Jackie Hejl Lake Ann I've never been to Coney Island before. I plan on going soon, and I plan on one day taking my children there to see it. If its gone, then I won't be able to have my kids experience the same wonderful thing I did. I'm praying that you'll be able to fight to keep Coney Island up and running.
4,190 6:13 pm PDT, Jun 22 Ilya R. Briarwood Going to Coney Island to hang out is like the one plan that never fails to keep me happy. It's the perfect place to relax because that's also the reason everybody else is going there. There's a lot to do, and lots of fun to have. Thanks a lot for doing this. It's greatly appreciated.
4,189 6:04 pm PDT, Jun 22 Sophie M. Brooklyn Coney Island is an amazing place. I smile every time I go there. There's no other place like it, and the boardwalk would not be the same without Astroland. Thank you for supporting this cause and not giving up without a fight. =]
4,188 5:10 pm PDT, Jun 22 Michael Brown Brooklyn Coney Island is the most magical place in the world! It's a symbol of how far a lot of hardwork and an imagination can bring us. Destroying Coney Island would not only rob us of our history, it would kill that spirit for future generations to come. Is that the kind of world we want to live in?! Please make sure that Coney Island remains for the people!
4,187 4:55 pm PDT, Jun 22 Megan Moore brooklyn
4,186 2:38 pm PDT, Jun 22 Angel Lawler Wilmer It's part of New York man! What would New York be without it..a stuck up city that takes itself WAY too seriously...the people of NY need a place to go where they can relax and have fun. I think we should definately try to save Coney Island.
4,185 9:38 pm PDT, Jun 21 Cruz Martínez Prieto Brooklyn-Madrid Because it has to. Because it´s a historical landmark. Because of Warriors. Because of Coney Island Circus Sideshow. Because I think there is no other place like Coney Island.
4,184 7:58 pm PDT, Jun 21 Brenna Chase Sunnyside Of all of New York City's history and culture, Coney Island's story is one of the most unique. There is nothing else like it in New York, let alone in the world. In the past 100+ years, the land, its amusements, its inhabitants, and all people who travel to experience Coney Island have had to face change - fires, demolition, rebuilding, challenges, opposition and compromises. Let's not make this the ultimate end to Coney Island's rich character that has remained throughout its many lifetimes and makeovers. I support anyone who has Coney Island and its advocates' best interests in mind!
4,183 2:51 pm PDT, Jun 21 Nancy Alexandru Kew Gardens New York City is losing both it's atmosphere and it's culture to the steady grip of gentrification. Society has become so fixated upon money and the idea of materialism, that simple pleasures that were once known have since become ignored. Locals are being priced out, the quality of life decreasing. The economy is declining, and as history warns, the fall of the modern Roman Empire is near! The children of tomorrow will not know what is seen by the children of today. Let's preserve both Coney Island and the rest of the city, along with what is history!
4,182 7:38 pm PDT, Jun 20 Anonymous Raleigh Coney Island is not only a beloved spot for New Yorkers, but a cultural landmark beloved the world over. It is as much a part of the New York City experience as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Coney Island has a truly historic legacy that must be preserved for future generations. In a time when so many of America's historic areas are being bulldozed in the name of progress, we need to stop and realize what we are losing. So much has already been lost. We cannot lose Coney Island. To do so would set a dangerous precedent. If we allow Coney Island to fall to "progress", then what will be next? Will we build an exclusive golf resort on the battlefield at Gettysburg? Will we add Bill Gates' face to Mount Rushmore? We must not bow to the whim of developers who favor progress over preservation. Coney Island must be preserved, if not for the wonder that it is, then for the pure joy and pleasure it provides. Ms. Burden, please do not let this development happen. It would be a great tragedy to lose a place as wonderful as Coney Island.
4,181 6:40 pm PDT, Jun 19 EBONY LANE BROOKLYN SIMPLY PUT, CONEY ISLAND IS PART OF MY HISTORY AND MANY OTHER'S OF DIFFERENT COLOR'S AND TONGUES. 4,179 11:29 pm PDT, Jun 18 Hayley Bubb New York Coney Island is a piece of New York's history and is the kind of attraction that is becoming increasingly rare. My grandparents first met there, my grandfather in his navy uniform and my grandmother new to the city from Tennessee. She has since passed away but he happily tells the story of when they met all the time. When I told him that they would probably destroy Coney Island to build condos he simply looked down, shook his head, and muttered, "it's ashame, it's ashame." It would be all too sad to see this place that is so intertwined with my personal history and the history of New York, along with the lives of it's millions of residents, be torn down for so petty a reason. If the administrators of this city have any heart they will save Coney Island. Thank you so much for the work you have done so far! Please don't quit, New York needs you!
4,178 7:33 pm PDT, Jun 17 Evan Kleinman Astoria Coney Island must be preserved not only for its historical significance but as a recreational and amusement area for all New Yorkers to enjoy. Hi Amanda, All of NYC knows how much you care about Coney Island. Keep up your good work of not letting Thor bully you into re-zoning the area.
4,177 1:44 pm PDT, Jun 16 Thomas Yovino Rockville Centre from my days as a kid till the present day i have always thought of coney as a wonderfull place my love for the cyclone and wonder wheel is just as strong now as ever. coney island was the favorite spot of both my grandfathers so it also has personal value to me. Thank you so much for helping to preserve coney for all of us who love it so much
4,176 12:12 pm PDT, Jun 16 giselle colon bronx i would like to see the cyclone being remade and more ride's and less ceaper then before.. it's not fare to tare down coney island because it's been there for so long that and it's the best thing for the community and for the children of the commuinty people love and cherish coney so much cause it remains a lot of memories like peoples first date and so much more and people feel safe and not only can they go to the beach but they also can go on ride's and eat and just enjoy the time they have there.
4,175 12:41 pm PDT, Jun 12 Laureen Briggs San Francisco We must preserve the gifts that those before us have left. Coney Island is like a footprint in time that encompasses both past, present and future. Current politicians need to use foresight and think about what these landmarks can mean to future generations! Will a Niketown ever be able to create and hold the nostalgic memories that Coney Island has for years?
4,174 9:27 am PDT, Jun 12 Jonathan Myers New York People from all over the world come to Coney Island.. There is no other beach like it, and I met someone very special there... Good luck!
4,173 8:33 am PDT, Jun 11 susan kaufman minnetonka It's a travesty to think that yet another US landmark and cultural institution will be wiped out to make way for "retail entertainment." The entire country has become on mega-mall, wfilling our lives and homes with ridiculous brands that reinforce to the rest of the world how shallow and materialistic Americans have become; at the great expense of our global environment. Why not save just this tiny little plot of land that has such immense historical meaing and value from one more Niketown? I hope you're victorious in your fight. thanks for fighting for all of us.
4,172 5:12 am PDT, Jun 11 Laura Gordon Tunbridge Wells I came to Coney Island as part of my honeymoon 2 years ago and loved it. I loved that it was pretty much free from chain stores. It had a lovely easy going feel to it and I look forward to returning in September. If it becomes what I fear - Starbucksified - I won't be coming back.
4,171 8:18 am PDT, Jun 10 Alan Arce Bronx coney island gives minorities jobs and its a place that brings family and friends together,i believe that it does need renivation but it does not call for the desctruction of it im rooting for you!!!
4,170 10:37 am PDT, Jun 9 Katie Dasse Coralville
4,169 10:19 am PDT, Jun 9 Richard P Wojcicki Brooklyn Its a piece of NY history.
4,168 3:58 pm PDT, Jun 8 Anonymous Brooklyn
4,167 11:54 am PDT, Jun 8 Matt Arnold brooklyn YES! The Coney Island amusement park is one of the things that makes NYC such a unique place in the United States. To replace it with more condos would give tourists and visitors one less reason to visit our city, much less move here.
4,166 1:24 am PDT, Jun 7 Stephanie Brown BROOKLYN Coney Island needs to be preserved!!!! My family (including myself) have all grown up working and just plain having fun on the beach and everything. I would hate to see what I have grown up enjoying my whole life be taken away that I can't share it with my children!!!!!!!!
4,165 6:18 am PDT, Jun 6 Virginie Danglades New York
4,164 1:25 pm PDT, Jun 5 Kathryn Giaimo Brooklyn It's the last truly romantic place in New York City. I've always thought of it as Troy, with layers and layer of past lives going down deep in the sand. Now it's all in danger of being bulldozed and entombed beneath hideous high-rises and unnecessary chain stores. Ms. Burden, please don't let this happen! Please stand up for New Yorkers and our beloved playground!
4,163 11:09 am PDT, Jun 5 Catherine Berclaz New York It is unique, exquisite and thoroughly New York. It is part of the great cultural heritage of this city. It's uniqueness should not be destroyed to put more junky luxury condos or anything else. We need to preserve our history and Coney Island is part of that not only for New Yorkers but people around the country and around the world. Some people only know Coney Island through movies or television it is one of the most recognizable places in the U.S.A and besides being NY it's distintcly American. It would be unpatriotic to tear down a piece of our national heritage!! Amanda, behind you 100% in preserving Coney Island, one of the most unique living landmarks we have in NY and in the USA!
4,162 8:49 am PDT, Jun 5 Sharon Eaton Hollywood I am a NY transplated to Florida! I LOVE CONEY ISLAND!! I believe that it should be preserved my grandparents went to the baths there I grew up going to CI and I want to bring my family there. I feel CI is a historical landmark and it should be honored my the city and refurbished with the original intentions. Amusement park for family to go to in the Summer like it has been for over a century. It would be a crime to make condos or hotels. No one wants to go to CI for a rock climing wall. You go for the rides, the Nathan's hot dogs and fries and the little mom and pop stores with the local color. I Love Coney Please SAVE IT! Dear Amanda, I applaud your efforts and I hope that they come to fruition! I was flabbergasted that they are going to shut down My Favorite Place on Earth, I hope to get my family there before the end of summer. I hope! Good Luck please save Coney Island!
4,161 8:28 am PDT, Jun 5 Lynn Kowalewski Brooklyn Coney Island has a long historic tradition as an amusement park - over 100 years! We need to respect history and the distinct cultural features that make NYC what it is. Bulldozing history to make way for generic chain stores, malls and cookie-cutter hi-rise condos/hotels is an appalling legacy to leave future generations. It is not sound "development" nor does it serve the interests of the communities it purports to help. Amusement rides, beach access and local mom & pop businesses are what has always been the backbone of Coney Island and has sustained it, even in it's reduced state. There is huge potential for the city to do the right thing and honor it's original plan, by expanding on history & building grand new rides and amusements. The last thing we need to see happen to a unique NYC landmark is to ignore it's rich tradition, pave over it's history leaving yet another plaque on the side of a generic hi-rise stating "on this site once stood..." (Ebbets Field? The original Penn Station?) Save Coney Island! - build rides, not malls. Dear Ms. Burden I appreciate your efforts in respecting history and developing Coney Island as a great Amusement Park, one that all people can enjoy. Build rides, not malls - the citizens of NYC deserve no less than what was promised in the original city plan for redevelopment. Thank you.
4,160 6:16 pm PDT, Jun 1 Stacie Peay Brooklyn I personally don't mind Coney Island being renovated. I just don't want to see the natives get displaced.
4,159 11:09 am PDT, Jun 1 steph cook leeds Yes I think Coney Island should be saved. I live in England and when I came across to New York, going to Coney Island was one of my must do things. I think it is a huge shame that none of my friends who will be going to New York after this year will have the opportunity to visit Coney Island. I believe it is a landmark of new york as much as anything else. Its a place that bands have written songs about, it has been used in films, It is a magical place with history and charm. Turning it into anything else would be a waste of everyones time.
4,158 12:17 am PDT, Jun 1 Neiloy Chaudhuri Brooklyn I have fond memories of it growing up and I want my children to experience it as well. It is an important part of me.
4,157 11:57 am PDT, May 30 Gina S. Brooklyn I would like to see Coney Island preserved because this is the only spot in Brooklyn its residents can go have fun during those lazy summer nights. To strip us of Coney Island Is wrong. This is a landmark just as important as the statue of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower.Brooklyn needs to be left alone instead of having condos built for the sole purpose of business. To be perfectly honest I love brooklyn and its my home and my heart, but if I were to come to NY for vacation I sure wouldn't do Brooklyn, that is what Manhattan is for.
4,156 2:55 am PDT, May 27 Terry O'Reardon Adelaide Historic beachside amusement parks worldwide are slowly dissappearing world wide. Coney must be saved as a unique USA and NYC attraction. I recently travelled from Australia to the US. The main purpose was to visit Coney Island before it dissappears. Please help preserve it so that i may have an opportunity to take my kids there on day.
4,155 4:19 am PDT, May 26 Sarah Stratton Princeton This is a fabulous historical landmark! Please don't turn it into a homogenous, corporate nightmare. Keep it up!
4,154 9:17 pm PDT, May 25 Brittany Shaw London This is the last place where freaks are safe. It's historical and cultural value is immeasurable. Whatever you need, please email me. We can't lose this.
4,153 4:55 am PDT, May 25 chelsea wassmer east hampton everyone needs to see coney island before they die. its really that special.
4,152 8:48 am PDT, May 22 Liza Dey New York
4,151 11:37 am PDT, May 20 Elliot Schulnik La Jolla yes, I grew up in ny and have countless wonderful memories of our subway trips from the bronx to exotic coney island. I remember the steeplechase and the incrediable rides, the hot dogs the beach and the little shows and galleries the smell of the beach, suntan oil and the ocean. Together it was always a great trip. Every trip to New York includes one to Coney Island. Do we really need more condos on the beach. As an Architect I value the past and everything cannot always be "best use", some things should be maintained as a cultural history of a city, keep up the good work
