Ask Medicare to Cover Life-Saving Lung Cancer Screenings

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the United States for both men and women. Each year, nearly 160,000 people die from lung cancer -- and most are diagnosed after their cancer has spread.

In July 2013, Donna went to see her doctor after her left shoulder "popped" and the pain didn't go away. She was given a diagnosis she never expected: her doctor told her she had lung cancer and it had already spread to her bones. Donna never had any symptoms of lung cancer before her diagnosis and she died just 5 weeks later at age 67.

Thanks to important research conducted by the National Institutes of Health, there is now a proven way to save lives by screening people who are at the greatest risk for developing lung cancer. But until Medicare provides coverage for those screenings, tens of thousands of Americans, like Donna, will remain at risk for having their lung cancer go undetected until it's too late.

Please ask Medicare to cover life-saving lung cancer screenings.

Donna's husband, Brent, and daughters, Dawn and Christina, desperately miss Donna and are sharing their family's story with the hope that other people at high risk for developing lung cancer can be screened before it's too late.

Please join Donna's family by taking a moment and asking Administrator Marilyn Tavenner to ensure Medicare covers low-dose CT scans for those at the greatest risk for developing lung cancer.

Dear Administrator Tavenner,

Each year, more than 228,000 are told they have lung cancer. Tragically, only 15 percent of people are diagnosed at an early and treatable stage, and nearly 160,000 Americans die each year.

In December, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) gave a "B" grade to annual low-dose CT scans among high risk populations. The USPSTF "B" grade requires private and other insurance plans to provide annual CT scans to people at high risk without additional costs. Now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services must act in order to make sure that Medicare patients at high risk can also receive this screening.

Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both men and women in the United States. That's why it's so important for Medicare to fully cover annual CT scans for those at greatest risk.

Too many of our loved ones have succumbed to this dreaded disease. To prevent more deaths from lung cancer, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services must include CT scans as a preventive service to seniors that are in the lung cancer high risk population at no cost. Early detection of lung cancer will save lives and allow for better treatment options and a higher survival rate.

Sincerely,
