23-year-old, Salvador Rodriguez, Mesa man upset with his wife tried to kill her dog by stabbing and hanging the animal six feet in the air with an electric cord, barbell and weights, police stated. He was arrested June 6  on suspicion of a felony charge of animal cruelty and criminal damage.

Rodriguez told police he tried to kill the dog with an eight-inch
butcher knife after he found an e-mail from his wife to another man and
found a photo of her with the man.

"It is sad to see that an
individual would take out his anger over his relationship with his wife
on an innocent animal," Mesa police Detective Tim Gaffney statted. "We
are very lucky the wife came home when she did. If not, the animal
would have bled to death."

Active cruelty implies malicious intent, where a person has
deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal. Acts of active
cruelty are often some of the most disturbing and should be considered
signs of serious psychological problems. This type of behavior is often
associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken very seriously.

Animal abuse in violent homes can take many forms and can occur for
many reasons. Many times a parent or domestic partner who is abusive
may kill, or threaten to kill, the household pets to intimidate family
members into sexual abuse, to remain silent about previous or current
abuse, or simply to psychologically torture them, flexing their
“power”.

It is not uncommon for the animal abuser to admit to authorities that
they killed an animal to get back at a person they were angry at, or to
"punish" the animal for bad behavior.

We petition for a vigorous prosecution and mandatory psychological testing and counseling if he is found guilty.
