Help save one of America's greatest natural treasures
The proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska's Bristol Bay wilderness may be the worst corporate assault on America's natural heritage that no one’s ever heard of.
Bristol Bay's untamed wilderness is home to the greatest wild sockeye salmon runs on the planet, an astounding diversity of wildlife, and a way of life for Native communities that have thrived there for thousands of years.
But a Canadian mining company wants to carve a gargantuan open-pit, gold and copper mine out of the heart of this American Eden.
The Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that the Pebble Mine carries catastrophic risk for Bristol Bay. But despite the warnings, Canada's Northern Dynasty Minerals is recklessly pushing ahead with this $6 billion mega-mine.
Send an urgent message to Northern Dynasty's president telling him to abandon plans for the disastrous Pebble Mine.
NRDC has been fighting to block the Pebble Mine for years. And thanks to people like you, we've been able to help pressure two global mining giants to withdraw their support for it. Northern Dynasty Minerals is the last holdout. They can be stopped, but only with your help.
To: Ron Thiessen
President and Chief Executive Officer, Northern Dynasty Minerals
I am outraged at your reckless plan to gouge the Pebble Mine out of Alaska’s spectacular Bristol Bay wilderness. Your colossal gold and copper operation would generate some ten billion tons of waste and devastate the world’s greatest wild salmon runs — the linchpin of an unspoiled ecosystem and a thriving fishery that generates $1.5 billion in annual revenue.
More than 80 percent of local residents — including Native peoples and commercial fishermen — don't want your mine or the billions of tons of waste it would generate. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that your mine would pose significant — even "catastrophic" — risks to this American natural treasure.
Your multinational corporate partners have concluded that this ruinous scheme is bad business and have quit the project. You are now standing alone, in defiance of local communities and worldwide opposition.
Bristol Bay is the wrong place for a large-scale, open-pit mine. I call on you to avert environmental and economic disaster by abandoning the Pebble Mine. If you do not, you can be sure the relentless and growing opposition will continue as long as necessary to stop this reckless project.
