Demand Steve Thomson use brains rather than brawn regarding feral pig issue. Murder isn't always the only option.

The reason this petition is important to me is the fact that our society always resorts to murder in order to deal with animals that they don't know what to do with. That is because they go into panic mode and cannot use the brains they were given so they resort to brawn. It is so typical of the mentality of our species to kill rather than learn how to live with something or someone, these feral pigs just like their domestic counterparts could be useful to us in that they have skills that we have jobs for, not as our slaves but as a win/win for everyone.

My solution to the problem is to think what can we use their skills at that they get to be themselves and still be free of slaughter and in return we get to eradicate another invasive species IE. broom (the plant) that came from Scotland that many an islander has cursed since I was a child and that was 60 years ago. Now wild pigs would love to root them up and in so doing stop the spread of broom from our beautiful spaces. I say wild pigs rather than domesticated because some of the places broom grows is in the wilderness and a domesticated pig would be prey for the predators such as bears, cougars and wolves (meaning the island), but not the wild pig they could defend themselves.

So I think we could farm them sort of, we could dart several and move them to any place we want them to root out what may be growing there that needs to be removed. We can learn to work with them and control their numbers by sterilization rather than culling. The pigs get to eat and root whole areas and hopefully they will feed themselves as well maybe we will need to supply water and corralling materials (whatever can keep them in an area til it is successfully rid of the invasive species). I am not an expert on wild pigs and personally have never even seen one but I can draw conclusions on my own that they are pig like. What kind of fencing keeps these animals in/out would have to come from another brain, that is why it is important to me to use our brains and solve problems rather than resorting to bloodbaths just so someone can shoot something and get rewarded. No more trophy hunters please.
