Illinois finally has a budget now. That's better than nothing — and it's essential for the millions of Illinoisans who count on social services, public schools and universities, and even our roads. It stops the bleeding and it proves that when people come together to raise our voices we can force the system to listen.

But the budget — and with it our state — are still held hostage to a constitutionally mandated flat tax. That's right: in Illinois, you pay the same tax rate whether you make $25,000 a year or $25 million.

Decades ago, the wealthy and well-connected put this flat tax into place. And it's not just bad economics, it's unjust and unfair, and it's unlike almost every other state. I'm running for governor to fix it.
