Bringing Hope to Life

Dan Kamas was only 7 years old when he lost his father to brain cancer. It was an impossible loss for such a young child to face, but as Dan grew older, he realized two things were missing — not only had he lost the opportunity to create new memories with his father, but he barely remembered the ones they shared during the early years of his childhood.

Inspired to pay tribute to father he barely knew, Dan signed up for the Austin marathon and set up a page on ourHope to raise money for brain cancer research. Through the page, he surpassed his fundraising goal and successfully ran 26.2 miles in honor of his dad.

But something else happened as Dan prepared for the marathon — not only did people donate money on his ourHope page, but they also left virtual tributes to his father. Dozens of people who knew the elder Daniel began to comment with stories from his life, sharing anecdotes about Daniel the runner, Daniel the mentor and Daniel the family man.

Incredibly, through the power of ourHope, supporters painted a picture of the elder Daniel Kamas, bringing his memory to life for his son. "I know firsthand the level of compassion and care City of Hope brings to the battle with cancer," Dan said. That's why he chose ourHope to raise money for cancer research — and learned about the amazing man his father was. Like Dan, we all have a personal connection to cancer.
