Conservatives: Stop Your Attacks on Science in Canada!
Conservatives in the Canadian government have continually shown a disrespect and disregard for public science and research. The most recent example is the defunding of the world-renowned Experimental Lakes Area Research Facility, which ran out of funds at the end of March 2013.
The closing of this critically important Research area will "save" $2 million per year out of a total budget of more than $10 billion. But what we're losing is cutting-edge research on ecological issues, including mercury pollution, acid rain and the affects of climate change. Scientists have said that this is the only place in the world for these types of controlled lake experiments.
This move is just one in many assaults on environmental science in Canada. And continuing to remove funding and neglect serious research will be detrimental to Canada's environment and ultimately our economy.
Sign this petition today to tell the conservative government that you demand that they take environmental science and research seriously.
Dear [decision maker],
Your decision to defund the Experimental Lakes Area Research Facility is just one in a series of moves that show your disregard for public science.
I am writing to tell you that these programs are critically important to the health of our environment in Canada, and it's time our government showed the Canadian people that they care about our health and the health of our environment.
Please take steps to put funding and political weight behind environmental research in Canada.
Thank you for your time.
