TV Execs need a wake up call!
Britney Spears' life is not reality. Carefully selected beautiful people romping around on a remote island are not reality. However, unemployment, job insecurity, and skyrocketing health care costs ARE reality for the majority of America. Britney probably can't handle the truth - but we can.
1.7 million people tuned in to watch Morgan Spurlock (the creator of "Super Size Me") try to live on minimum wage for 30 days. That means 1.7 million people want to learn more than how to become a Hilton. There is an audience out there that wants to put the real back into reality.
It's time for a reality check! Tell TV Execs you are tired of watching celebrities like Paris Hilton make fun of real life struggles. Ask them to create reality TV that informs, enlightens, and connects the people of America. Tell TV Execs it's time to get real!
Americans love reality shows-from Survivor to America's Next Top Model. It's no secret that our favorites are the ones that show people like us, having adventures or chasing their dreams.
But lately we've noticed you getting a little desperate. A reality show about Fabio? About marrying off your own parents? A million typing monkeys could come up with better plots than those.
We have an idea. Put something revolutionary on TV: a reality show about reality.
We want to see ourselves on TV, not just screw-ups and celebrity has-beens. Sure, we'll probably still watch the Britney & Kevin show, but we also want to see how a couple with less money and media attention deals with juggling family and career. Make a show about real people with real problems and real solutions, and we'll watch it.
It's not just about ratings (although we think this would be a hit). Use your power to connect people to each other-to build a real community. Help those of us in the O.C. to see what life is like in Iowa instead of the other way around. Open America's eyes to the drama that's right in front of them.
Make a reality show about reality. We'll watch.
