Global Food Crisis

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: CARE

The world is in the midst of a global food crisis and with the cost of food on the rise -- up 55 percent -- developing countries cannot afford the food they need to properly nourish their people.

For example, a million children in Burundi under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition, and in Ethiopia, 84,000 children suffer from malnutrition in famine-hit regions.

World governments pledged billions of dollars in food assistance for 2008, but many nations have not come through. As the world transforms into a truly global community, where nations are increasingly interconnected, it is time for the United States to step up and deliver the aid it promised.

Tell Congress to make good on the promise to help bring an end to world hunger today, and help the 850 million people suffering from chronic hunger and poverty.

Dear Members of Congress,

Consider how little is spent on foreign aid -- less than one percent of the U.S. budget. Even in hard times, the United States has one of the highest grossing incomes in the world; it is our responsibility to do more to fight global hunger and end poverty.

The world is experiencing a growing food crisis with no end in sight. As the cost of food skyrockets, and the financial crisis ripples through the global economy, the world's 850 million hungry are struggling to survive.

In today's interconnected, global community, we must show increased concern for our neighbors around the world. It is time for our country to step up and deliver the aid it promised to help relieve world hunger.

I think we need to start fighting the food crisis in our own country, then start fighting World Hunger. Making our world a better place should start off with the people closest to us. Many people in the United States are going hungry every day. Many hard working Americans go to work and when they get paid they can not afford to feed their family. I think it is very sad that a family has to make a choice between food or paying their monthly bills. When I hear people speaking about World Hunger in our country, it seems that people would rather spend their money on feeding people in other countries. I think it is great that our country is so generous and want to help the World, but we should not forget to help the people in our own country. I have heard many people in our country talk about people that are homeless or that have to get government assistance like they are just lazy. The truth is most Americans are just a few pay checks away from being homeless and hungry themselves. Once a person in America is homeless with no address then they have no address to receive government assistance and many people are to proud to receive the assistance they desperately need. One of the main things we as a country need to do to stop hunger in our country is to stop sending work that American's need overseas.

As a Director of our Local Food Pantry the numbers of families in need has risen drastically. We as a local community are generously giving to help alleviate hunger to those closer to us. We need to as a nation give to those who do not have the means of supplying a nutritious meal for all women and children.

The US is the grossest waster of food...dumping multiple tons of edibles into garbage heaps daily. This capitalistic "overflow" serves only to make the common American poorer but could be saving COUNTLESS lives around the world...not to mention the poor & homeless HERE!
