Send Magnus Hustveit, who raped his girlfriend, to prison!

Niamh Ni Dhomhnaill, a former secondary school teacher from Dublin, saw her rapist walk free yesterday. She said the suspended sentence given to her former boyfriend sends a clear message that rape is not being taken seriously here in Ireland.

The Norwegian man, Magnus Meyer Hustveit (25), pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of rape, and one count of sexual assault, between 2011 and 2012.

Sex without consent is rape. Period! Niamh Nic Dhomhnaill, who has waived her right to anonymity, said "I wanted to highlight that rape in sleep is rape, it doesn't have to be some stranger in an alleyway."

A judicial system represents the collective people and it must uphold the law regarding what society dictates as acceptable or unacceptable behaviour.  If this does not happen then the system is fundamentally flawed and will inevitable fail the people, as is the case with Niamh Nic Dhomhnail.

Talk of injustice is no good without purposeful action.  Our action here must be to have our voice heard, to let our judicial system know that rape and sexual assault in any form is not acceptable in society and should carry a representative consequence. A custodial sentence should be imposed for the sake of the victims, the integrity of the judicial system and for the development of a civilised society.

Please sign this petition and let the Irish "Justice" system know how you feel about their verdict.
