Request for the City of Cranston to join the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement

  • by: Peter Baptista
  • recipient: Michael Napolitano, Mayor, City of Cranston
The undersigned encourage Mayor Napolitano to join other Rhode Island cities such as Providence, Warwick, and Pawtucket in their actions to sign on with the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

All are encouraged to sign the petition whether you are from Cranston, RI or not.  Showing one mayor he has an opportunity to make a global impact may lead others to do the same.
As you begin your first term as Mayor of the City of Cranston, we present to you a growing problem in the world and offer an opportunity for Cranston to help make a difference.

We ask that you strongly consider joining the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.  We should join Pawtucket, Providence, and Warwick in signing onto this extrodinary agreement.

The goals of the program are simple:
  • Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration projects to public information campaigns;
  • Urge their state governments, and the federal government, to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol -- 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and
  • Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system
More details on the agreement can be found on the web at: http://www.seattle.gov/mayor/climate/default.htm

We appreciate your time and attention to this matter and strongly encourage you to take the same actions some of the other major cities in the state have already begun to take.
