Stand Strong Against Polar Bear Hunting

Target: Dale Hall, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
Hunting polar bears is illegal in the United States. The recent decision to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act closed a gaping loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that had allowed wealthy U.S. trophy hunters to kill polar bears in Canada, where such hunting is legal, and import polar bear trophies into the U.S.

But now Safari Club International, a big game trophy hunters' club, is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reverse this ban on importing polar bear trophies. More than 900 polar bear heads and hides had been imported into the U.S since 1994 because of the MMPA loophole.

We have to do everything we can to prevent the polar bear's downward spiral. We need the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stand strong on polar bear trophy hunting - urge Director Dale Hall to uphold the ban on importing polar bear hunting trophies from Canada.

Tell Director Hall why you support the new ban on importation of polar bear trophies:

Dear Director Hall,

I am writing in support of the recent ban on importation of polar bear trophies from Canada. I am disturbed to learn about Safari Club International's attempts to reverse this ban.

Polar bear populations are already declining due to melting sea ice, and bears continue to be stressed and threatened due to oil and gas exploration. Polar bears do not need the added stress from trophy hunting.

Polar bears are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and should be protected. Please stand firm on prohibiting the importation of polar bear parts.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

I grew up in the arctic, and bears are an integral part our ancestry and culture.

Polar Bears are already struggling to survive. They need our help and protection NOW - before it's too late.

Dear Director Hall, Please stand strong in maintaining opposition to polar bear hunting. As well we need stand strong in banning the import of polar bear trophies to the United States from Canada. This is a sickening past-time and shows how humans have no respect for animals, even when they are threatened or endangered. Thank you for your concern

Polar Bear hunting is sick unless done for self survival. Bringing back a trophy is even more sick! It only proves that a bullet is deadly...nothing more. Should the bear have lost in a fight without weapons, then you MAY have a case! You put people away if they take a life...just imagine if you let them get away with it and put their skins on the floor for people to step on and put their heads on the wall to be admired! And humans aren't endangered are they?? Think on it! LOVE YOU!

TO HUNT POLAR BEARS IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS AND FOR SO MANY REASONS. THESE REGAL ANIMALS NEED TO BE PROTECTED AT ALL COST. RATHER THAN BEING HUNTED, THEIR SURVIVAL SHOULD BE ASSISTED.

I shouldn't have to tell you why I support this ban, it's common sense.

I totally support your ban on the killing of Polar Bears, and making them trophies on their shelves. Polar bears are wild and beautiful creatures, and should be left alone. I would hate to see these beautiful beasts become extinct.

Polar bears are in enough trouble as it is, what with global warming - which we cannot stop. They don't need the added pressure of hunting. Intelligent human beings have better things to do.

Please allow these animals to survive when their habitat is already under attack by climate warming. Is killing an animal for sport really something that civilized nations should encourage?

Mr Hall, The polar bear , to my surprise are not only threatened by global warming but also because of hunters! I am a Canadian residing in the U.S. and I was shocked to hear that. Biodiversity is really important for our future, so please do protect polar bear hunting and importation for goods.

Please, we must move into the New Millenium as civilized beings. This is the time to prove we can do it! There is so much proof that animals feel pain, suffering, love for their offspring, and sorrow at the loss of their own loved ones as humans. The Native Peoples refer to these animals as "our Brothers". Please protect the senseless deaths of nature for ego driven uncivilized mankind!

Let the animals live in peace. Miserable, angry humans shouldn't be allowed to take their anger out on animals.

Please do not reverse this ban- the bears already have enough threatening their existence. These aren' like deer whose population has gotten out of control -causing wasting diseases, starvation & raiding of people's gardens.

I had a nightmare 3 nites ago that this dark shadowed man had cut the hind legs off of two polar bears and had them in a body harness that he constantly yanked on and was very cruel to them. They scuffled along dragging their hindparts on the ground. What woke me up sobbing was the sadness, suffering and pain in the eyes of the one bear that he made climb up on a chair and lay down like a dog. That looked is still bothering me this moment. For God's sake, PLEASE help those bears. They must have been real somewhere in this world and I saw through some window of time or something. Please help them! Please help them. MS UNIS

Please do all that is possible to give voice to the plight of these creatures. We are the only ones who can act in conscience - I ask you to use your conscience to take steps to protect these animals which can no longer provide for themselves due to our squandering of habitat.
