This petiton asks the Governor of California to take steps to protect what remains of the old growth forest in the Mattole watershed in Humboldt County, in Northern California.
Dear Governor: We ask you to take whatever measures necessary to protect the remaining old growth forest on Pacific Lumber property in the Mattole River watershed. About 2000 acres of old growth is left. This unique ecosystem provides habitat for endangered species. A tiny pecentage of the original old growth forest in California is left. Pacific Lumber has been known for its unsustainable logging practices since it was taken over by Texas based Maxxam Corporation. These practices have harmed water quality and downsteam residents. Steps could be taken to purchase the land or to ban old growth logging.
We signed the "Petition to save the Mattole Forest" petition!

Dear Sir, Mr Governor of California,
It takes a great deal of integrity to stand up for what cannot defend itself. Here, in West Australia, it took a change of government before what little remained of our old growth forest was protected. It is only now that the forester's "facts" (i.e. clearfelling is good for the forest or we are only doing what nature does etcetara)has been brought into question. Before, in the bad old days, the timber industry controlled the air waves and print media, green ethics was scorned, but now no longer. Now being green is serious business and the rights of flora and fauna put on an equal footing with the needs of humanity. But we still have a long way to go. We here in Australia seemed to have followed the US in all its practices. George Bush has always been opposed to protecting the environment but we expect nothing less from a man whose family is so involved with the oil industry. I wish you well in your campaign to protect the last stands of old growth forest in the Humboldt. Your oldgrowth forests belong to the world, they are everyone's concern. And everyone of us loses out when such things are taken away.

I am a native Californian and the thing I love the most about this country is our nature. People come here from all over the world to experience the outdoors and our amazing redwoods because they don't exist anywhere else in the world.
It is our ethical and moral RESPONSIBILITY to create a world that is beautiful for our children and for future generations. We are just stewards of the land. In a few short generations we have managed to pollute our environment and destroy our lands. What will the world look like in 5 years or in 10 --- let alone 100 years from now?
The redwoods were here long before us and they deserve to be here long after we are gone.
I love to go hiking, camping and spend time outdoors. I am so grateful to live in San Francisco, so close to so many breathtaking scenic vistas. I am so grateful that John Muir had both the vision and foresight to create the Sierra Club and protect our land for the future generations (us and beyond.)
Being outdoors in our natural world is so important because we live with such accelerated speed - with the internet, computers and other technologies. We live so far removed from the natural cycles of our world, as we continually separate ourselves from the earth. Breathing in the rhythms of nature is crucial for our survival as a species on this planet. The natural rhythms of nature - the trees blowing in the wind, the flow of a river, the march of ants, the rays of the sun touching the flowers, the beautiful sounds of birds singing to each other - slow down our nervous system. The more time we spend in nature, the more relaxed, balanced and peaceful we are.
The Redwoods protect us and energize us. The Redwoods are our guardians. The Redwoods are so ancient, magical and alive. The Redwoods have many stories to tell and things to teach us if only we have the ears to listen and really hear. The Redwoods forgive us. The Redwoods love us. We need the Redwoods as much as they need us.
So many of our children today live in concrete jungles, never escaping the confines of the city or leaving the parameters of roads. So many of our children learn about nature from National Geographic magazines and the Nature Channel on TV. So many of our children have never even been to a zoo. They don't know how to build a fire or even go fishing. They deserve to have a chance to explore our beautiful world, before it's too late.
No wonder why crime is up. No wonder why the world is filled with hate. No wonder why we fear each other. No wonder why so many people are dying.
When one spends time in nature, it is easy to see how we are all connected. We are all one. Life is beautiful. Life is a miracle. Nature just is. A baby lizard doesn't have to remember how to walk. A butterfly doesn't have to remember how to open its wings to fly. A sunflower doesn't have to remember how to face the sun. Just as we don't have to remember how to breathe.
If everyone spent more time in nature, there would be more peace in the world.
Please don't destroy any of California's last remaining redwoods because we need them all. We need to offset the pollution we've created. We need a place to escape to, to recharge our batteries, to become balanced. We need to respect Gaia, Mother Earth, and stop cutting down all her trees. We need to respect the trees and not destroy them any longer.
California is considered to be the final frontier, the last wilderness in the world. We have the most majestic coast and redwoods. We must guard and protect them.
When was the last time you went away for the weekend? Not to Las Vegas or Hawaii, but in your own backyard, to one of these parks?
Our children deserve to have a beautiful future.
Our children deserve to live in a world of peace.
The Redwoods deserve a chance to live.
Blessings and gratitude,
Marla :)

Who are we to be so bold and brazen as to believe we have the right to take the life of so magnificent a being as a redwood. They live in harmony with us why can't we live with them and not on their raped and slaughtered carcasses? They have so much to tell and share with us! LET THEM LIVE UNMOLESTED!!!

It's time to base policy on good ecological sense and what keeps us and earth's life support systems well. With the climate crisis we need ecological insurance, not exploitation! The Mattole is the heart of a crucial and almost completely tattered ecosystem. And for decades it has been the foundation of some of the most cutting-edge restorarion work in the world. Enough is enough! Save all that is left!
