Reject Torture and Support the Closure of Guantanamo Bay!

Target: U.S. Senate and House of Representatives
Sponsored by: New Security Action

On the second day of his presidency, President Obama declared to the world that the use of torture would no longer have a place in the United States of America -- announcing he would close the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

Guantanamo is known the world over as a place where people have been abused and tortured. In fact, many of the egregious techniques that have shocked the international community -- stripping and hooding detainees, blaring music non-stop for several hours at ear-shattering levels and waterboarding -- have been used on the detained men and women.

Although Guantanamo is opposed by so many of our military leaders, former Vice-President Dick Cheney has launched a public campaign to discredit the president's security strategy and is currently working to pressure politicians into keeping Guantanamo open.

The United States must once again be known as a champion of justice, human rights and the rule of law. Urge Congress to stand with President Obama and our military leaders to reject torture and support the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

Dear [Decision Maker],

On the second day of his presidency, President Obama declared to the world that the use of torture would no longer have a place in the United States of America. He announced that he would close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, the shameful symbol that has undermined our nation's security, destroyed its moral authority, and is opposed by so many of our military leaders.

[Your comment will be inserted here]

Since President Obama's historic announcement, former Vice-President Dick Cheney has launched a public campaign to discredit the president's security strategy for political gain and sought to pressure politicians into turning back the clock. Not surprisingly, he and his supporters have used misleading and intimidating rhetoric to evoke uncertainty across the country.

More than a dozen retired military leaders joined President Obama when he announced his decision to close Guantanamo because they strongly believe it is in America's national security interest. Former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell and former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq General David Petraeus agree. Gen. Powell has said: "If it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo. Not tomorrow, but this afternoon. I'd close it." His view is shared by Gen. Petraeus in equally strong terms: "We don't need it, and it's causing us far more damage than any good we get for it."

For one thing, America should not main tain presence in Cuba. In particular, it is extremely cruel and offensive for America to commit political atrocities on the land of caring Cubans. Also, America should not torture anyone anywhere.

Its time for us to rejoin the civilized world, dump torture, make a recommitment to the Geneva Convention in a believable way. make sure the iraqi war -Guantanamo debacle is seen in history as as a Buag ero phenomena that olny happens when we let a leader run amok, averbalance the balance the trinity of the judicial, legislative, executive branches, and that all has been now corrected. if only I had confidence it couldnt happen happen again, never again let a president grab too much power

Torture is a violation of human rights, simple as that. No method of inducing pain as a means of interrogation is justifiable. To do so makes us as bad as terrorists; trying to get our way through fear and the utmost and outrageous methods of coercion.

Guantanamo bay must be closed. It is an extemely horrible place, especially for people who have been detained. I oppose it very much due to how the detainee's are abused there. Please close it down, it is the right thing to do.

Don't use the tactics of your enemies! Take the higher moral road. Close this notorious prison that your president said he would shut down. Release the Canadian citizen, Omar Khadr, who was a child soldier when you captured him and incarcerated at Guantanamo prison. It is a disgrace that you ignore international conventions and agreements on how to work with child soldiers. I am a Canadian citizen and demand that the U.S. government immediately release Mr. Khadr to the Canadian government or any international humanitarian organization such as the Red Cross if our current minority conservative Canadian government under the reign of Prime Minister Harper continues to stonewall our citizen demands to have Mr. Khadr repatriated.

The contempt for the rule of law exhibited by those who opted for this bizarre institution is an embarrassment, and an affront to American values.

Obama's election was a mandate to close Guantanamo Bay detention center. Close it immediately! Then indict Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld as war criminals and turn them over to the World Court in the Netherlands. Stop spending 57% of the U.S. annual budget on the military and there would be plenty of money for universal health care for all U.S. citizens, free college educations for the best and the brightest students, jobs to solve our complex social and environmental problems, and fix our broken infrastructure. Get your priorities straight before the angry mobs of unemployed (including disgruntled veterans) march on Washington with torches and weapons. Stop pandering to big oil, the military-industrial compley, the for-profit medical insurance companies, the pharmaceutical manufacturers, and the failed financial/banking interests and auto manufacturers (who have shipped jobs overseas). You are a public servant and should be representing We, the People. If you want to be re-elected, start doing your job and represent the voters.
