Get Toxics Out of N.C. Schools

Target: N.C. Senate
Sponsored by: The nc conserva Network
Children spend nearly half of their time at school during the academic year. Because their bodies are small and still developing, they are especially susceptible to long-term health damage from exposure to toxicants in their environment.

That’s why it’s critical that we support The School Children's Health Act of 2005 (H 1502). This bill would require North Carolina public schools to reduce the risk of student and staff exposures to pesticides, diesel fumes and other sources of toxic contaminants. Most importantly, the bill mandates that parents are notified about the use of toxic pesticides that have the potential to negatively impact the health of our children.

The bill already enjoys broad-based political support; the North Carolina House of Representatives passed it unanimously on May 24th. Now, we need you help to make sure it passes in the Senate.
deadline: 6-24-2006

Dear [your Senator]:

I'm writing as your constituent to ask for your support of the NC School Children's Health Act of 2005. This is a vitally important bill that will reduce student and staff exposure to toxic chemicals at school, using low-cost (or no-cost!), common-sense methods. Children are more vulnerable to toxic exposures than adults because their bodies are smaller than adults' and developing rapidly. Taking steps to reduce their exposure to diesel fumes, toxic pesticides, mercury, arsenic-treated wood and mold will help them to stay healthy, learn better, and reduce liability at our public schools.

Many school districts around North Carolina are already using the common-sense methods in the bill, such as Integrated Pest Management, to make schools safer and cleaner for students and staff. I hope that you will show your support for healthy children by supporting this bill.

Sincerely,

[your name]
