Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) believes that women in the military are heroes, and should be afforded the same rights as those whom they fight to protect. An amendment sponsored by Senator Shaheen would allow the federal health care plans of servicewomen to cover abortions if they have been raped or are the victims of incest.

The Defense Department acknowledged 3,191 sexual assaults within the military in 2011, but considering the amount of unreported sexual assaults, the real number is probably much, much higher.

The prevalence of sexual assault in the military is a horrifying truth, and Senator Shaheen has fought diligently to protect these survivors.

"This is about equality for these women," said Shaheen. "It's about giving these women the same access to abortion as other federally covered women."
