Futrell was originally charged with a Capital Crime but the charge was reduced to First Degree Murder. The 7 year-old Kayla was allegedly forced to drink the commercial grade insecticide Atroban which caused a painful and torturous death. The autopsy showed that two different drugs used to treat psychotic episodes were found in the child's system. This medication would have had a sedative effect on a person causing a small child to be unconscious or physically unable to move.
According to the AOC this January 7 appearance is a hearing and not a trial. The family of Kayla is concerned that a plea arrangement has been offered to Ms. Futrell freeing her of any and all murder charges. The family of the child desperately want justice for their loved one's horrible death and want Onslow County/the State of North Carolina to put their best effort into prosecuting Ms. Futrell for First Degree Murder.

ATROBAN POISONING: Nausea and vomiting commonly occur soon after swallowing. Other immeditate signs and symptoms include: apprehension, excitability, dizziness, headache, disorientation, weakness, a tingling or pricking sensation on the skin, and muscle twitching. This is followed by loss of coordination, convulsions similar to epileptic seizures, and unconsciousness. When chemicals are absorbed into the skin, the skin begins to blister and burn.
No specific antidotes are available. Persons assisting a victim should wear chemical resistant gloves and be careful to avoid becoming contaminated by the pesticide. If the pesticide has been ingested, empty the stomach as soon as possible by giving the conscious patient ipecac and water or by inserting a finger into the throat. Caution: Inhaling vomitus can be life-threatening. Timely emergency treatment is vital to survival.
Update:Please help us spread this disturbing news that Kayla's alleged murderer is going to be allowed to remain out on her bond for what will more than likely be another year and a half at least. According to the Asst. DA there is no limitation as to how long this case can be put off. We all know if she were still being held behind bars, she would have seen her day in Court a long while ago based upon her Constitutional Rights. What about the victims? Who cares about the victim? Where do their rights come in and play a part? Never, it would seem. Please help in whatever way you can. Thank you.

This is a tragedy that did not have to happen. The state failed this child once when they did not take the child abuse reports seriously. This child had multiple bruises on more than one occasion and was painfully thin. She herself told officials that "Aunt-Mom" Carolyn Futrellwas the one who put the bruises on her face, arms and bottom. This case screams for justice. I am a former resident of Onlsow County and remember this little girls obit in the Jacksonville Daily News. I hope justice is served well in a timely mannner concerning this case. Children shouldnt die this way. Someone needs to bring justice to the person responsible because social services should have removed this child from the person she was living with.

Kayla deserved much better than what she was handed in life. Maybe if Nicky didnt care more about herself and roller skating and meeting new guys, then she wouldnt have handed her child to this evil woman to take care of. As a mother, it is your job to protect your children from all evil. I hope that Nicky has haunting nightmares, at the very least,for the rest of her life, and Carolyn is sentenced to nothing less than death. Unfortunatly, I only knew her as a baby. She lived with us for a short time. Very sad. I have felt a lot of emotions about this.
