Don't Repeal the Stream Buffer Zone Rule

Target: EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
For the past 30 years, the Stream Buffer Zone Rule has prohibited mining activities within 100 feet of perennial or intermittent streams, which serve as habitats to a vast array of aquatic life and provide drinking water to local communities.

The Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is proposing to rewrite this rule to eliminate the buffer, giving mining companies access to mine through streams across the Appalachian region.

We cannot let our environmental protections be dismantled. Please tell EPA Administrator Johnson to reject this proposal.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to express my concern about the Office of Surface Mining's (OSM) proposal to effectively repeal the Stream Buffer Zone Rule. For the past 30 years this rule has prohibited mining activities within 100 feet of perennial or intermittent streams, which serve as habitats to a vast array of aquatic life and provide drinking water to local communities.

OSM's proposed rewrite of this rule eliminates the buffer, giving mining companies the green light to mine through streams across the Appalachian region. This blatant dismantling of environmental protection cannot go forward without Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval. As administrator of the EPA, it is your responsibility to protect our nation's waters. I urge you to reject OSM's proposal to destroy additional streams.

Nature does what NO engineer can do nearly so well or so cheaply. Trees and ground cover are the perfect cleaning solvent to ensure drinkable water - our most precious life-giving resource. Here in Athens, GA. we have a 75 foot countywide stream buffer for nearly all of our perennial streams, the river, etc. In some cases the buffer is 100ft+. We understand the value of allowing nature to be our housekeeper - it cleans pollutants out of run-off before it hits our most valuable resource - water. You are responsible for ensuring, in collaboration with local communities, the ability to deliver water that is clean and abundant. Please do not abandon what you are charged to do.

Endangering this buffer zone can pollute streams or other bodies of water that can effect local wildlife, plant life, and yes, even human life. These areas can even flow into other and more important bodies of water and effect more than ever planned, leaving everyone worse off. We need to protect our beautiful stream environments, animals, and even people from this threat.

Plese don"t pollute our streams again. They will hurt our drinking water and destroy precious wildlife. This is poor legislation. Don"t cave in to special interest groups on this one.

There is a very important reason for this rule, both in the past, in the present and in the future. Please keep it in place. Our communities deserve clean drinking water and aquatic life is important to us and our environment as well.

Why turn to clock to endanger the eco system of this special protected area. It benefits people with safe drinking water.
