We Don't Need More Dirty Coal!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of global warming pollution in the United States – yet right now, our country is poised to increase these emissions by building many new dirty coal plants.

Virtually all of these proposed, new coal plants lack carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which aims to capture a plant's carbon emissions and store it underground. Building more plants without CCS would lock us into decades of rising carbon emissions at a time when we must rein in global warming pollution.

We already have renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies readily available that can meet our country's near-term energy needs. Please urge Congress to oppose the construction of new coal-fired power plants unless they feature CCS technology.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please oppose the construction of new coal-fired power plants that lack the ability to capture and store their carbon dioxide. Building new pulverized coal plants would lock the United States into decades of dangerous carbon emissions that will make it extremely difficult to avoid the worst consequences of global warming.

[Your personal comments will be added here.]

Funding of carbon capture and storage technology should be limited to 5 to 10 demonstration plants until the technology is proven to be safe, reliable and cost-effective.

Analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists has found that the country can meet its near-term energy needs and curb emissions by using readily available renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. I urge you to support more aggressive deployment of these cleaner, safer technologies.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

You can capture the carbon at the power plant site but mountains are still leveled to mine coal which pollutes rivers, destroying birds/forests and all wildlife habitat...is that clean and green?.....hell no....carbon capture is an illusion... the forests cleared by coal mining/mountain leveling can no longer remove CO2 from the atmosphere...the era of coal needs to come to an end soon before West Virginia and other coal mining areas worldwide are turned into toxic dead zones. Let's not forget that dams/reservoirs are the single largest source of human caused methane gas emissions.....even more than livestock.....methane is 25-72 time as powerful as CO2 in causing global warming...many countries such as India, Turkey and many other countries around the world are now engaged in a frenzy of dam building on major river systems claiming dams are a "green" source of electricity when in fact they are not green and one of the most environmentally destructive methods of electricity generation on earth, devastating river ecosystems, drying up rivers, killing fish and creating stagnant water which increases malaria and parasites. Many people who are displaced by dam building are not compensated and have to give up their way of life when the river eco-systems are destroyed....millions of people worldwide have been and are now being affected by the worldwide frenzy of dam building as nations choose river ecosystem destruction through dams as a method of generating electricity. Many large dams worldwide have been proven through recent scientific study to emit more greenhouse gases than coal fired power plants which are known to be one of....if not the dirtiest method of electricity generation on earth. Cold river water cools oceans, lakes and seas....dams/reservoirs destroy this cooling effect as they hold, warm and create stagnant water...in some parts of the world rivers no longer reach seas/lakes/oceans because so much water is held back and diverted by dams for electricity generation, irrigation and industrial use. Surely this destroys ocean/lake/sea life which has evolved for millions of years to live within certain water temperature ranges which are disrupted by dam building/obstruction of cold water flows. In tropical areas massive areas of tropical forest, plant and animal life are often destroyed by the flooding created behind dams. Now that alternative cleaner methods of electricity generation are being developed such as wind, solar, geothermal and natural gas we need to stop this frenzy of worldwide dam building and save and restore the worlds river ecosystems. At this time when there is more support than ever for developing "alternative" energy sources, it would seem a wise choice for the coal industry to get on board with efforts to improve their technologies.

We must do a far better job at reducing the emissions from coal plants before constructing new ones.
