Conservative filmmaker James O'Keefe and three others -- one the son of a U.S. Attorney for Western Louisiana -- have been arrested and charged with "entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony." The four allegedly broke into the Louisiana office of Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) representing themselves as phone repairmen, then attempted to gain access to the telephone systems of the office.
O'Keefe became a star of conservative media after producing undercover videos in ACORN offices that led to Congress revoking funding of that organization. Incredibly, following the ACORN scheme, 31 House Republicans signed a resolution to honor O'Keefe and his partner, stating that they "displayed exemplary actions as government watchdogs and young journalists" and "are owed a debt of gratitude by the people of the United States."
Attempting to wiretap a U.S. Senator's office is neither exemplary nor honorable -- it's illegal. Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) and his 30 Republican colleagues need to condemn this crime in the strongest terms and immediately withdraw their support for this resolution.
Dear Representatives:
I am shocked that you supported a resolution honoring James O'Keefe for "exemplary actions" given his arrest with three others for "entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony."
Mr. O'Keefe and his associates allegedly attempted to access and tamper with the telephone system of Senator Mary Landrieu's office in what is being termed the "Louisiana Watergate." I urge you to publicly condemn this crime and immediately withdraw your support for the House resolution honoring O'Keefe and Hannah Giles.
