ROAR FOR DARFUR

The Canada-based group Citizens for Change (C4C) is organizing a nation-wide - and hopefully world-wide petition calling on the governments of Canada, USA, the EU, and the United Nations to take effective action to resolve the Darfur conflict:
- Recognition of Darfur conflict as a GENOCIDE
- Enforcement of the UN-imposed arms embargo on Sudan
- Deployment of UN peacekeeping forces to supplement the poorly-funded, ill-equipped, and outnumbered forces of the African Union currently stationed in Sudan, so that successful enforcement of a ceasefire becomes a reality
- Active diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, by conducting talks involving both the government and rebel forces, and pressuring the Sudanese government through such means as denial of travel visas.

We are looking for 1 million signatures. Go ahead and sign it - it will only take a minute and you would have added your voice to our collective ROAR for Darfur!

We, the undersigned, the citizens of your nations and the citizens of the world, demand the recognition of the Darfur Conflict as a genocide, proper enforcement of the UN-imposed arms embargo on Sudan, implementation of Resolution 1706 calling for peacekeeping forces, and  active diplomatic efforts to resolve the Darfur conflict.

We strongly believe that positive action in the Darfur conflict is impossible when many of the world's most developed states - as well as the largest international organization, the United Nations - are unwilling to acknowledge the Darfur crisis as a GENOCIDE. In the light of the "scorched earth" policies of ethnic cleansing by the Janjaweed militia, and relocation of Arab populations to villages of displaced non-Arabs being pursued by the Sudanese government, we refuse to see this issue as nothing less than a genocide.

We call for better enforcement of the arms embargo on Sudan. Amnesty International has accused Russia and China of supplying arms, ammunition and related equipment to Sudan, which have been transferred to Darfur for use by the government and the Janjaweed militias and thus violating the UN arms embargo against Sudan. We refuse to stand by while world powers exploit the helplessness of innocents embroiled in the Darfur conflict - we demand that these nations be pressured to stop their audacious activities, or else be held responsible on the international stage by the world's citizens.

We call for a full implementation of Resolution 1706 passed by the UN Security Council, calling for a new 17,300-troop peacekeeping force to supplement the African Union mission in Sudan. Without further assistance by the UN, the poorly-funded, ill-equipped, and outnumbered AU Mission forces will not be able to enforce ceasefire.

We call for more effective means of pressure on the Sudanese government to resolve the conflict and end its support for the Janjaweed, such as denial of travel visas until postive steps have been taken.

Finally, and most importantly, we demand active diplomatic efforts by the governments of Canada, the USA, the European Union, and the United Nations to facilitate peaceful resolution of the Darfur conflict, involving both the government and the major leaders of the Sudanese Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A). We refuse to accept simple "words" of chastisement and demand real diplomatic action.

We urge you to avoid the repitition of the horrors of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. We refuse to allow thousands more to be killed due to inaction by our leaders and diplomats. For the moral good of our nations and for the sake of our future generations, we urge you to act.
