Help Eliminate Infectious Tuberculosis - Support Cures and Education

The World Health Organization estimated that in 2004, there were 9 million new cases and almost 2 million deaths from Tuberculosis (TB) worldwide. And in 2005, over 14,000 cases of TB were diagnosed in the United States alone.

New legislation, called the Comprehensive Tuberculosis Elimination Act, has been introduced in the U.S. Congress, which would expand federal activities on TB education, research, and cures. It would:
  • Fund the development of a TB vaccine;
  • Authorize and expand educational activities to eliminate TB;
  • Create loan repayment opportunities for physicians and researchers enrolled in TB training programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH);
  • Increase funds for TB training, treatment and education programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the NIH Fogarty International Center; and
  • Expand TB research and research training programs at NIH.
Join the American Lung Association in urging your U.S. Representative to eliminate this deadly disease - Tuberculosis - by supporting this important legislation!
Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent and a concerned citizen in your district, I am asking for your support in combating one of the world's largest health problems - tuberculosis.

Please cosponsor the Comprehensive Tuberculosis Elimination Act (H.R. 5836). This bipartisan legislation will intensify efforts to eliminate tuberculosis in the United States where thousands of cases are still diagnosed each year.

Tuberculosis is an airborne infection caused by a bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, kidneys or spine. Tuberculosis is spread through coughs, sneezes, speech and close proximity to someone with active tuberculosis. People with active tuberculosis are most likely to spread it to others they spend a lot of time with, such as family members or coworkers.

Today it is estimated that over 10 million people in the United States have latent tuberculosis. World wide, over 2 billion people carry the latent tuberculosis infection. Each year almost 2 million people die around the world from tuberculosis infection.

Tuberculosis can be effectively treated and cured with a course of antibiotics. However, the development of multi-drug resistant strains of tuberculosis threatens to make this an incurable disease. Multi-drug resistant strains of tuberculosis have been reported around the world and have been reported in every state in the United States.

Tuberculosis is manageable and can be controlled. The Comprehensive Tuberculosis Elimination Act (H.R. 5836) will provide the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) the authority and resources needed to eliminate tuberculosis in the United States. I hope I can count on your support in the fight against tuberculosis.
