Honor Tribes and Defend Bears Ears National Monument

  • by: Peter Scott
  • recipient: Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke

UPDATE: President Trump has signed an Executive Order to "review" all large national monuments created since 1996. This is a move targeting Bears Ears and other monuments that the extractive industries covet. Help spread this petition far and wide to demand Interior Secretary Zinke uphold our national monuments!

Bears Ears National Monument is a treasure that belongs to all Americans and honors Native American tribes. The beautiful mesas, cliffs and canyons contain over 100,000 tribal archaeological and cultural sites across the 2,000 square mile area. This richness of environmental resources and Native American history is what led five tribes to lead efforts to protect their ancestral land.

The Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni and the Ute Indian Tribe have come together for the co-creation and management of this amazing area

Since President Obama listened to these tribes and other Bears Ears supporters and used the Antiquities Act to create the Bears Ears National Monument, the oil and gas industry and their backers in the Republican party have opposed the monument, filing a lawsuit to stop it, and urging President Trump to remove protection for the area.

It would be unprecedented for any president to remove protection from national treasures set aside through a previous administration. Urge Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to defend Bears Ears National Monument and defend the important cultural artifacts at risk.

Dear Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke,

Bears Ears National Monument is a national treasure that belongs to all Americans and honors the five Native American tribes who fought for its creation. We stand with sovereign tribal nations in asking you to leave the Bears Ears National Monument boundary alone. Please work with us to protect this land for future generations of all people.

Four out of five native nations in the region of the Bears Ears National Monument park located in southeastern Utah have been contacted regarding the petition and one of them, the Pueblo De Zuni, requesting an electronic copy eventually that they would request electronically to print out and hand-deliver to government officials! Looking forward to providing that to them as soon as possible!

I have notified Ryank Zinke, United States Head of the Interior that I have gathered over 25,000 signatures on the behalf of the Bears Ears National Monument park, the largest park in the United States which was created by recent President Barack Obama. I am waiting for a response, but will notify all signers of his response at that time.
