111 4:31 am PDT, Mar 26 Ms. samara esemann 0 Female Roma, Italy   00168 Italy Because it's useless for the criminals, for society (who is helpless anyway), and useful just for the carreers of politicians. Most of the times trials are unfair, and the targets are afro-americans, native americans, the poor, and other minorities. The real criminals are let do whatever they want.
110 2:03 pm PDT, Mar 21 Ms. Kristina Jernstrom Lysebo 31 Female Larvik   3260 Norway The death penalty is a much greater shame to humanity, than the crimes the criminals individually created, because it's what put the sane to shame. Wasn't eligible
109 6:35 pm PDT, Mar 20   Cindy Alvarado 16 Female Willis Texas 77378 United States I am so strongly against the death penalty. There are just so many things wrong with it that it's ridiculous. First of all, since when is it right for the government to LEGALLY kill you? They get to kill you legally without any repercussions, while you can't because you'll get killed. That contains no logic, as does the fact that they're showing you that killing is wrong by KILLING people. "As if one crime of such nature, done by a single man, acting individually, can be expiated by a similar crime done by all men, acting collectively." This is a quote from a warden of Sing Sing prison in NY in the 1920's and 1930's, and it explains this concept perfectly. Also, let's not even mention the innocent people that get executed because of unfair trials, blind judges, shady witnesses, a poor defense council, and so many other factors that come into play to ensure that these people never really do receive a fair trial with a jury of their peers. In Florida, for example, even if the jury decides on prison for life, the judge can decide to revoke that sentence and give them the death penalty instead. That is so wrong. I mean, are our juries not capable of coming up with a "fair" verdict; and if they're not, then why do we even have them? Oh, that's right, it's because it's in our Constitution and therefore, they are in violation of it, just like they're in violation of it under the "no cruel and unusual punishment inflicted" clause. Because, yes, the death penalty is cruel and unusual. So many things can go wrong during the process and they do end up feeling pain and it takes a while before they are actually dead. Some of the drugs that they use in lethal injection are actually ILLEGAL to use to put dogs to sleep! Can you believe that? Dogs are being killed more humanely than us! Also, for all those people who only care about money, life in prison without parole is cheaper than an execution. Convicts aren't really going to live for another 40 years in prison; they'll probably chain-smoke themselves, overdose, or even commit suicide while in jail. The cost of executions are really high because of the fees involved in the trial and retrials and appeals. Also, IF the death penalty is even administered in the end, it'll be years later, so what's the purpose in it? Desmond Tutu couldn't have said it any better when he said, "To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice." So why is our justice system serving revenge? It's been proven that the death penalty is not a deterrent because crime rates have remained the same, if not increased. Also, where is the death penalty given the most? Oh that's right, here in the south. That proves that the death penalty is arbitrary because I can bet you that if you took the same criminal who got the DP here in Texas, over to one of the northern states, he would not receive the death penalty. Also, why don't all the states have the death penalty? Because they know it's wrong. We, as the United States, look barbaric because we have the death penalty. "It can be argued that rapists deserve to be raped, that mutilators deserve to be mutilated. Most societies, however, refrain from responding in this way because the punishment is not only degrading to those on whom it is imposed, but it is also degrading to the society that engages in the same behavior as the criminals." This is a quote from Stephen Bright, a human rights attorney, and I completely agree with him. How can we be considered civilized when we are committing the same crimes as our criminals? Have we not progressed as a society? The death penalty has changed over time, but they still haven't come up with a HUMANE way to kill these people, because it doesn't exist. Who knows how long it will take them to realize this? Over the years we've come up with marvelous tools: we went from stones, to metal, to electricity, and to guns. It's too bad that we've used them for something as horrible as the advancement of the death penalty, respectively being: stonings, guillotine, electric chair, and to firing squad. On Feb. 8, 2008, the Supreme Court ruled that Nevada, the only state to still use the electric chair as its SOLE method of execution, could no longer use it. How come they were still using the electric chair when it had already been considered unconstitutional because of the eighth amendment? That was the reason why they came up with lethal injection, which is still in violation of it, but some crazy people think it's not. Why are the criminals offered various methods of execution? That's like taunting them, saying, "Which way do you want to die? Would you rather have something similar to a heart attack, eyes popping, body catching on fire, tongue protruding, head chopped off, or bleeding to death? Which one would better suit you? But don't worry, none of this is cruel or unusual!" This is crazy!!! We cannot continue just standing here, doing nothing, while our own American people are being mindlessly killed by our own government, the government that was established "by the people, for the people, and of the people." I know that I won't stand here watching them get away with that unspeakable crime, putting the blood of our own American people on our hands. I feel dirty and ashamed knowing that such things occur, and I won't let it keep happening. I hope this at least puts you to think about the death penalty, and hopefully, it'll change your mind. The people that commit said crimes and then receive the death penalty for it, are obviously mentally ill, and therefore, deserve to be helped, not killed. We cannot deny them of this. You don't know how sad it is to go and read the people's last statement, the last words they say before they are killed by our government. That just breaks my heart. There is no justification for the DP; no human being should be able to decide when another human being dies legally. That, only God, can do. Wasn't eligible

80 9:00 pm PDT, Aug 10   Michelle Mubarak 17 Female Shawnee Kansas 66216 United States The death penalty is expensive, ineffective in deterring future crime, illogical, and unethical. In addition, the death penalty is biased toward people of a certain race and income. Neither the color of your skin nor the money in your pocket should determine whether you live or die. It's completely unacceptable. This isn't a difficult decision. When you look at the facts, you will see, beyond a doubt, that capital punishment is wrong. Wasn't eligible

63 11:31 pm PDT, May 20 Mrs. Angela Maisel 54 Female Martinez California 94553 United States Aside from the fact the killing is wrong and violence only begets more violence so the death penalty is not the answer. But, also, in this country, the death penalty is so often misused. Too many innocent people have been murdered by the death penalty. And killing one innocent person is far too many. The criminal "justice" system in this country is too flawed and racist to put anyone to death. Yes

Also, in this materialistic country money is more important to some than peoples lives(which is sad) and it costs much more to have people on death row than to imprison. Yes

One of the commandmants is do not kill, and by putting someone on death row we are commiting murder and then we are no better than the person that we put on death row. It is not for us to decide if that person deserves to die for what they did, that is for god to decide, they are human beings and despite their crime still deserve to be treated like a human being.
