More Sham Sex Ed Programs? Tell Congress NO!

Target: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Gay Men's Health Crisis
If you entered an American sex ed class, you might be shocked at what you found: instead of contraception, they preach abstinence only until marriage. Instead of enlightened notions of equality, they promote regressive stereotypes about homosexuality and gender.

They're transporting us back in time to an era when dangerously little was known about AIDS. Sounds crazy, right? Yet, on Capitol Hill, lawmakers are poised to increase funding for these ineffective, discriminatory programs!

Join Gay Men's Health Crisis in calling for an end to this outrage.

Dear Speaker Pelosi:

Given your record of support for HIV/AIDS prevention and equal rights policies, I was surprised and disappointed to learn that the House Labor, HHS and Education Appropriations bill increases funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs by $28 million.

Abstinence-only-until-marriage programs promote sexist, gender-based stereotypes about women and men and their roles in sex and relationships. These curricula also promote an anti-gay bias, claiming, for example, that AIDS is the inevitable result of homosexuality. We urge the House to reject bigotry and ignorance and to support public education that protects the health of our nation's youth.

How could any sex ed. program be trusted after explicitly telling children that "AIDS can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact" or that "As condom usage has increased, so have rates of STDs?"

We signed the “More Sham Sex Ed Programs? Tell Congress NO!” petition!

Throughout high school and junior high I have attended many health and sexual education classes. I have been shocked on numerous occasions how little my peers knew about sexual health and pregnancy. On more than one occasion, girls had inquired as to the effectiveness of birth control against HIV and STIs. Once, someone asked if a girl could become pregnant from oral sex. Another if a girl was standing up (because of gravity). Or if a girl could become pregnant from anal sex. Or if spermicide alone could prevent AIDS. Some wondered if lesbians could transmit disease at all. The list is endless. By not educating people, it will create a clueless generation who will only learn the consequences after they have already made a terrible mistake. That mistake could be an unwanted pregnancy. Or it could be HIV.

Teaching abstinance until marriage has never worked at any time in history, and regressing to that false ideal and is as ridiculous as using a chastity belt. Any increase in STDs is from those NOT using condoms (or abstinance for that matter). The only people I know to have had abortions are Catholics who believe (not believed) that contraception is a sin! Bigotry has no right in any society, modern or not. No one person is better than any other. Ignorance breeds health crises and the least we can do for the children is to provide them with the education they need to be productive, happy, and healthy in society.

More kids today have HIV/AIDS than they did in the 90's! We must stop this!

THIS IS NOT 1779! I WANT MY CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN TO HAVE PROPER, NON-JUDGEMENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION AND SEX EDUCATION. THANK GOD THAT I AM OPEN AND HONEST WITH MY KIDS AND HAVE TAUGHT THEM WHAT IS NOT TAUGHT IN SCHOOL - BUT NOT EVERY KID IS SO LUCKY! OUR CHILDREN ARE TOO IMPORTANT TO RISK THEIR ENTIRE FUTURE WITH MYTHS AND RELIGIOUS CRAP. THEY DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT REPRODUCTION, BIRTH CONTROL, AND STDs. STOP THE BULLSHIT THAT IS BEING "TAUGHT" NOW!
